What's in a name? Originally the airline was simply branded "kulula", which tranlates from the Zulu into "it is light", "it's easy" or it "it's simple". Over the years they have alternatively referred to themselves as "kulula Air" (especially while Gidon Novick was in charge of marketing, and this was used to differentiate the flights-side of the business from the holidays and financial sections) and "kulula.com" (to draw attention to the website through which clients can do bookings). The airline's call sign during radio transmissions is Comair (the same as for its sister brand British Airways, as they operate under the same licence). Its ICAO code is CAW, whilst its IATA code is MN.

When your stomach starts rumbling, just call a flight attendant over to purchase one of kulula’s in-flight snacks. Keep your card handy, they don't accept cash any more! Prices for snacks for January 2020: A Chicken Mayonnaise on Seeded Roll is R42, small Pringles will set you back R19,50, a Yum Studio Bar (new!) costs R15,50 while a Priestley Gin & Tonic costs R38. The new Tapas Box will set you back R75 and includes salami bites, crackers, cheese, a seeded honey bar and calamata style olives.

P.S. Please note they only accept debit and credit cards on-board flights!

Kulula Airlines Flights

Kulula Flights are Rated 4.5/5 from 98 reviews

Don't panic if your kulula pilot announces that your flight has just landed in Harare - they love joking. kulula Airlines (Code MN) is one of 4 budget airlines who have been operating in South Africa (LIFT recently joined), and is known for its humorous in-flight commentary and advertisements.

Kulula resumed operations at the end of 2020 after completing the business rescue process. They ran into financial difficulties during the 2020 COVID-lockdowns.

Kulula also means 'Easy' in Xhosa and Zulu, referring to the ease with which it is to travel with them from booking to boarding.

Based in Johannesburg, the kulula brand is owned by Comair (who also operate British Airways flights in South Africa), a company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and its steadily-increasing offering includes travel, credit cards and cellphone connections.

Latest News:

  • 2021-08-18: Kulula will resume operations on 1 September 2021, but seem to have used their time off to reinvent themselves. They will now be offering bagless airfare with the goal of offering more flexiblity. The FlyFare will only include 7kg of hand luggage. The Pack & Go fare will include 20kg of checked luggage as well and, finally, the 'Fully Loaded' option will offer more flexibility with changes.

  • 2021-07-15: Kulula has extended the suspension of all flights until the 31st of August 2021. This is due to the lockdown regulations being extended until 25 July at least and the increased risk posed by new COVID variants to both Comair staff and customers.

  • 2021-07-05: Kulula has cancelled all flights between 5-29 July 2021 following travel restrictions being introduced by lockdown level four. While restrictions only apply to domestic leisure travel to and from Johannesburg, the airline has suspended all flights. They hope to resume operations by 30 July 2021 when travel restrictions are gone and demand has increased again.

  • 2020-09-11: Kulula is back! The airline's funding came through and they are resuming operations. All domestic flights will resume on 1 December 2020, excluding Durban - Cape Town flights and Lanseria flights.

  • 2020-05-05: Kulula has entered voluntary business rescue. The proceedings will hopefully safeguard the company and its stakeholders. They hope to resume operations in November 2020.

  • 2019-06-03: Comair has appointed two CEOs to fill the shoes of Erik Venter. Glenn Orsmond and Wrenelle Stander will be sharing the role of CEO from the 31st of July 2019. Both have been with the company for several years: Wrenelle as executive director of Comair's airline division and Glenn as financial director. They will be tasked with optimising the airline's business performance and building on their diversification strategy. Erik is a tough act to follow, here is to hoping they can fill his big shoes.

  • 2019-05-23: It is the end of an era! Comair CEO, Erik Venter, has resigned and will leave the company by the end of July 2019. He has been with Comair for 23 years, 13 as CEO. Fingers crossed that the Kulula brand will remain as funny as ever. No decision has been made regarding a new appointment.

  • 2018-08-12: Kulula is introducing a Q-Jump option which allows travellers to skip long boarding lines by only paying an additional R70. This isn't all that the additional fee affords you though! Q-Jump passengers also get to access the hand-luggage stowage on-board flights first and their checked bags will get specially tagged so that it reaches the carousels as soon as possible. The Q-Jump option can be added during the online booking process, or up to 24 hours before flight departure through the ‘Manage my booking' option on Kulula's website. Do note that the number of Q-Jump passengers are limited on each flight, so it is best booked as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. To fully utelise their benefits Q-Jump passengers must arrive at the boarding gate prior to boarding time to ensure they receive the full benefits. Passengers must head to the marked boarding gate and present their boarding pass with the phrase "QJUMP" printed on it during the check-in process. It is as close to business class as you're going to get with Kulula.

  • 2017-11-10: From the 1st of December 2017 Kulula guests will have to pay for all on-board snacks with either a credit or debit card as cash will no longer be accepted. This follows a notice in the Khuluma about two month ago that cashless payments would soon be possible.

They told me what documents to bring and how to check in. The flight was smooth and departure and arrival was on time. They also sent emails telling me the weather for the week I was going to Johannesburg. I am very impressed with kulula.

  • 2017-09-28 Rating 5 /5 : "I am currently in my second year at UCT enrolled for a BA Law degree. As we all know the life of a student is never easy, especially while on a student budget. When I saw that my favourite rapper Travis Scott was coming to South Africa I was over the moon! However, when I found out he would only be performing in Johannesburg and Durban I was very upset.

My friends and I decided to set out on the adventure of a life time. We flew from Cape Town to O.R. Tambo via Kulula early that Thursday morning. The flight was very accommodating and one of the smoothest flights I’ve been on to date! After we had an awesome time at the concert and we got to spend the rest of the weekend with some friends in Pretoria. I enjoyed catching up with old friends as I had previously studied at the University of Pretoria.

Time flew and suddenly it was Sunday and time to pack our bags. We flew from Lanseria airport back home to Cape Town via Kulula. This flight was just as smooth as the first and it helped me relax and I was able to catch up on some much needed sleep. I would recommend using Kulula airlines to any group of students wanting to embark on the adventure of a life time!"

  • 2017-08-14 Rating 5 /5 : "I travelled with Kulula Airways for the first time on the 3rd of May 2017 and it was also my first time of flying. I had mixed emotions over the trip. I was flying from East London to Joburg. Considering it was my first time to fly, I feared the take off and landing. To my surprise I didn't evennotice it, the journey was so smooth. The pilots kept updating us on the weather, the route and the air hostess were very kind and were smilling and accomodating. I must say my first time of flying was made incredibly memorable by Kulula Airways and for that I am very happy for your service."

  • 2017-07-13 Rating 5 /5 : "Myself and my husband had the opportunity to fly from Lanseria to Cape Town in February 2017 for our wedding anniversary. We used kulula because of the great combined service with car hire. It was the first time for me actually. It was emotional because I left my kids at home, but every step I took was wonderful and so user friendly. From the airport to getting on the plane. The staff. The pilot. The nice snacks. Getting on that plane was the start of a very romantic weekend and a very nice end when we came back. I want to book with kulula again for next year February. But this time my whole family with adults and three children. Thank you for great service kulula.

  • 2017-06-12 Rating 5 /5 : "Apart from the Wright brothers, I owe you a word of gratitude for making my trips to and from Johannesburg enjoyable. Being greeted by friendly staff and being able to book flights in an affordable and dependable manner is not to be taken for granted.

My last flight was a return flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Both flights I took with Kulula, as they worked out the cheapest (but still not that cheap) with the use of my Vitality discount.

Both flights were extremely enjoyable. I even made a new friend on the flight and we chatted all the way. A 2-hour long flight always creates great opportunities for relationship building, especially when the holistic experience is smooth and of such a high standard.

On a scale of 1 to 5 I honestly had a fantastic (5) flight experience. I traveled to visit my boyfriend who lives in Johannesburg, (I live in Cape Town) so the fact that my heart was full of excitement might have contributed to the delight. The flight went well and was perfectly on time, which is of high importance to me as I am so excited to see him that a delay is never something I am grateful for ;)."

  • 2017-02-09 Rating 5 /5 : "My fiancé and I flew to Cape Town for my cousin's wedding on Kulula. I was happily surprised at the legroom in the aircraft; as well as the prompt take off. We arrived without a glitch, and was able to disembark quite quickly. Flight attendants were friendly and helpful. Thank you for a great experience."

  • 2017-02-01 Rating 5 /5 : "Thanks again for a super natural and wonderful return flight during December 2016 when I visited my kids in Cape Town. The service and staff on my flights ware excellent, all the staff members very friendly and always helpful especially at the arrival in the plane and departure when landed. My return flight was early in December (7th – 17th Dec 2016), both flights exactly on time and clean inside. I`m now waiting for your specials in April and May 2017 as my kids want to visit us in Pretoria. Keep on with you good service for you are the best airline in SA! "

  • 2016-03-08 Rating 5 /5 : "Like always, my last flight was without exception as good as ever!  I love flying with Kulula!
Their flight attendants always makes you feel truly special with their warm and friendly welcome. I must say though, I missed the usual humor during flight announcements, but their friendliness totally made up for that! Can't wait to fly again! HEEEEHAAAA FOR KULULA!"

  • 2016-01-07 Rating 5 /5 : "I recently flew down with Kulula.com from Durban To Cape Town. I chose the airline because all my family and friends travel with this airline and they are quite reliable. My flight experience was wonderful! As it was my 1st time, I was extremely scared, but all the hostesses were friendly and tried to calm me. I had my 2 year old niece as well and they were calming her down as she didnt like being on the plane. They helped us a lot! The service was great as well as they kept checking up on us. On a scale of 1 to 5, I will definitely give them a 5! My experience was wonderful! "

  • 2015-07-29 Rating 5 /5 : "Flying Kulula is always an amazing experience, all the years I have travelled I only use Kulula, the staff are professional, efficient, and so friendly. From a Customer point of view, I would definitely give them a 10 out of 10. Once every year or two I fly my 83 year old mother in law down from Cape Town to visit and she will only fly Kulula, she thoroughly enjoys the sense of humour from the highly experienced flight attendants, the prices are very accommodating. Kulula caters for everybody, the young, the old, Executives, and people from all walks of life. Everyone on that aeroplane gets treated exactly the same. The Flight Attendants’ go out of their way, to make your flight comfortable and it always is a memorable experience. I have enjoyed great laughs on the Kulula plane, I love getting on the plane but hate having to get off again. All I can say is it’s been an amazing journey and an unforgettable experience, each and every time. I have never had any problems and Kulula remains the King of the Air. The communication skills between the Customer and Flight Attendant is top class – they really make the airline customers feel valued, which to me is one of the main reasons, I have always flown with Kulula. They stand out and outclass the other airlines, by far. The Flight Attendants not only resolve travel issues, they have great personalities, they are always dressed to perfection, they are enthusiastic and definitely have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Well done Kulula, Service excellence personified. "

  • 2015-07-20 Rating 5 /5 : "The last time I flew with Kulula was on the 14th of April 2015 from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) to Cape Town. The airhosts were friendly and attentive. I thoroughly enjoyed my flight as sitting for 2+ hours can lead one to become slightly irritable. The onboard foods were surprisingly fresh and the Kulula.com magazine I found kept me amused as David is one of my favourite comedians. All in all I would recommend Kulula.com airlines to anyone. All the experiences I've had with them were pleasant and not stressful at all. The staff are quick, neat and efficient. Everything just flows when I travel Kulula. No delays, no hassles, complete comfort and entertainment (I really love the mag.) "

  • 2015-07-15 Rating 5 /5 : "We booked a Kulula flight from Lanseria to Durban and back complete with . No need to say anything more but...+++ SECOND to NONE! Perfedt flight to DBN, spotless car, perfect service and flawless landing back in HLA. So lets see what you guys have on offer for August, we might just want to book another flight..."

  • 2015-07-03 Rating 5 /5 : "I am a frequent traveller to Johannesburg every two months. I have been using Mango airlines and Kulula airlines for many years. I am  very satisfied with the service I receive every time I travel with these airlines. I am  65years and as a frequent traveller I thoroughly recommend these airlines to my family and friends. As I am a frequent traveller I frequently use Thrifty car rental for my car hire. The staff are very helpful with my baggage and very assisting."

  • 2015-03-30 Rating 4 /5 : "We flew with Kulula on 28 February, and it was the most delightful flight- friendly staff, on time, fantastic all round! This particular flight and the return flight 2 days later were both 5/5. I couldn't fault it at all."

  • 2015-03-29 Rating 5 /5 : "My last flight that I took was with kulula. I am very happy flying with kulula and the reason for that is because my departure was on time and my arrival was on time as well. The cabin crew are very friendly and helpful as well they always have a smile on there faces. I love kulula's taking off and landing. I feel really safe with kulula. Kulula pilots will always keep you posted about the weather whiles you on board they always make sure that u seated whiles taking off and landing. All I want to say is that I am happy with kulula the prices are affordable and reasonable. The pilot will always announce to make us aware when we are about take off and land. thank you kulula."

  • 2015-02-10 Rating 4 /5 : "I flew Kulula on 1/2/15 at 20h20 from DBN to JHB. Flight went smooth. The air hostesses were very friendly and the plane was clean and quite spacious and comfortable. There is not enough advertising done for Kulula's sales unlike Mango who does a lot of Happy Day promotions on the media. I didn't give it a 5 because I think there is room for improvement with regards to notifying customers about sales."

  • 2015-02-04 Rating 5 /5 : "The last flight we took with Kulula was to Durban last year, I still prefer to use you guys above all the other airlines in this country. You are friendly, on time and without stress. We like the quirky comments and the flight was a pleasure."

  • 2015-01-22 Rating 5 /5 : "We flew return from Jhb to King Shaka in December. We departed on the 19th and returned on the 26th. As always the flight turnaround time was amazing, well organized and the staff are always efficient."

  • 2015-01-20 Rating5 /5: "As usual, our last flight for my husband and I on Kulula was wonderful. On time, good value for money service. WE ONLY FLY KULULA!"

  • 2015-01-14 Rating 5/5 : "The last time I travelled with Kulula from Lanseria to King Shaka I was very impressed. My grandson was only 5 months old and I was super impressed with the additional allowance for car chair and pram. The staff were very attentive and, as always, the intercom kept us all amused. I intend to travel again later this year."

  • 2015-01-08 Rating 3/5 : "Hi, my last flight experience was terrible! I spent the shortest amount of time with my folks than I ever spent previously, but it was also the first time that I hired a car while there. Their car hire sounded promising. 200km free power day they said. But I learned that it actually wasn’t free and the shortest visit of my life had also instantly became the most expensive too. #LessonLearned. Flew with kulula from OR Tambo to Durban. Both flights were delayed. First flight by 30mins, second by 2.5 hours."

  • 2014-12-30 Rating 2 /5 : "I flew to Cape Town from Johannesburg over the festive season (from the 24th of December - 28th of December 2014). I used this website and flew using Kulula Airlines there and back. The flight was amazing and I got very good service. "

  • 2014-12-01 Rating 2 /5 : "Flew on Kulula twice over the weekend and both flights were delayed. The crew on the second flight was extremely grumpy and they kept bumping into me while walking in the isle without even acknowledging that I was there, they must have bumped into me around 15 times. There was a guy in front of me that played music on his phone during the whole flight and despite many passengers asking the crew to tell him to stop, nothing was done. Disappointing experience on both flights. "

  • 2014-11-19 Rating 5 /5 : "The flight was good, there were no delays and the hostess were very friendly and helpful. As usual I never really have any problems with kulula. "

  • 2014-10-16 Rating 4.5 /5 : "Always a pleasure flying with you. With hearing and seeing horror stories on the news, I still feel safe. Never had a delay. Luggage always safe and no turbulence!"

  • 2014-10-09 Rating 5 /5 : "On Tuesday morning I had to make the return flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg. On the flight there I was flying with Mango Airlines…upon my return flight I was flying with Kulula. Having had a very pleasant and easy flight with Mango the week before – Kulula had a lot to live up to. And with it being my return trip (nobody likes flying home from Cape Town do they?) and what with it being a 6am flight I was feeling extremely grumpy. I got to the airport and the bag drop off queue was quite long…although luckily I had checked in online already so all I had to do was literally drop my bag off. The lady working the check-in counter was extremely friendly and even though I was crying like a big baby having had to say goodbye to my boyfriend just a few minutes before – she managed to make me smile even if just a little. Already I was starting to feel at ease. As soon as I got to my gate the flight was already boarding so that was another positive point added to my trip with Kulula. Once on the flight it wasn’t long before we were in the air…and I was fast asleep. The flight attendants were very courteous as I think most of the passengers at that time of the morning caught up on their 40 winks. The pilot advised us that it was a beautiful day in Lanseria. There was no turbulence to speak of just an extremely comfortable flight. I’m so happy that Kulula’s chairs still recline just a bit because I think my neck would have cramped badly had it not. I’m sure the flight attendants must have had a good laugh at me each time they passed me as I fell asleep with my mouth wide open – I only sleep like this when I am extremely comfortable. The flight seemed to last 10 minutes rather than 2 hours and we even arrived at Lanseria ahead of schedule. Off to baggage claim I went and the airport staff at Lanseria are so helpful it really did make my journey so much more bearable – which isn’t easy when I leave my boyfriend. So thank you Kulula. I was not disappointed and I will definitely be flying with you again soon! I’d also like to say that I booked my return ticket through www.southafrica.to and that entire process was just so easy that it has encouraged me to book through the website every time I fly now. Thanks again for the pleasant experience from the booking to the flight to the baggage claim! Couldn’t have asked for a more enjoyable trip!!!"

  • 2014-10-08 Rating 5 /5 : "Imagine the most nervous you have ever been... Now multiply that by one million. HA I remember it like it was yesterday. I had gotten a call from my best friend’s fiancé down in Cape Town offering to fly us down for her surprise birthday party. We were ecstatic! Not only was I going to see my BFF for the first time in three years but we (myself and my then boyfriend now husband) had never flown before and this was to be our first time. So ticket prices were compared and we settled on Kalula.com as our first voyage via AIR. I remember looking at my ticket every night before the flight from the safe place I stored it under my T-Shirts. The excitement was building. The day had come and thanks to my slight OCD we were already all packed two days before hand. Off to the airport we went and I felt like I could cry or laugh or do the cry laugh. Truth is I actually got so scared that I wrote a letter to my daughter to tell her how much I loved her etc. just in case... We bordered and it felt like my hand could provide water for the whole Sahara. I was sweating my heart was climbing through my chest and it felt like I was going to have the most horrendous panic attack of my life. Then the engines roared to life and i thought I was going to faint. However non of this was going to stop me or make me get off the flight. I looked over to my boyfriend and he grabbed my hand and reminded me to breath, with his kind face I could feel myself relax a bit. Here we go. And we catapulted into space, WHAT AN AMAZING FEELING. Up Up Up we went and I don't think I even looked inside the cabin for longer than 2 mins at a time. I was fixated. It was everything I imagined and more. I calmed almost immediately after levelling and realized how silly I was being. The staff were so friendly and cheerful, exactly what you want when going on holiday. The descend came and on our way down the baby that I am grabbed my boyfriend’s hand again and smoothly we floated back down to earth. There was a tiny thud when we landed but it took me a peek out the window to confirm the plane was in fact grounded. Then the pilot came over the intercom with a very funny "shoo, we made it" hahaha the whole plane burst into laughter. I had the most amazing CT trip that year and all I could think about was that was my way home and I could not wait to bored again. I had the most amazing first flight experience I would rate it 5*, and I have flown over 8 more times since, I feel like a junky hooked on flying. I love it and look forward to planning trips away for my family. And I always know exactly where to start. Thank you to SouthAfricato! I am HOOKED"

  • 2014-09-16 Rating 4.5/5 : "In March I flew with Kulula and from Cape Town to Johannesburg, and during the Johannesburg to Cape Town flight, I was lucky enough to experience “Sky Dine” with Liezel Van der Westhuizen and Robertson spices, with a four course meal prepared by Rueben Riffle. It was absolutely amazing. Just based on this, I would give them a 5 out of 5. But for the Cape Town to Joburg flight, I would give them a rating of 4 out of 5. The staff were friendly and entertaining, and the seats were comfortable."

  • 2014-09-11 Rating 5/5 : "I only use Kulula.com when flying domestically to Cape Town and Durban. I  have never picked up any problems or major delays with them. They are defiantly my airlines of choice. Keep up the good work and high standards guys."

  • 2014-09-09 Rating 5/5 : "I always use Kulula every month and find it very comfortable as i am travelling to Cape Town or back to Johannesburg. The flight attendants are very friendly and helpfull"

  • 2014-09-02 Rating 4/5 : ""With our last flight we really enjoy flying with Kulula and me and my husband just prefere flying with you"

  • 2014-08-25 Rating 5/5 : ""My last flight on kulula was quite scary as the plane experienced some turbulence and was very unstable just prior to landing, but the skilled pilot took control and landed the plane skillfully! I would rate it a five as I absolutely love the thrill of experiencing turbulence! It made for a more exciting flight"

  • 2014-07-25 Rating 5/5 : ""Flying from OR Tambo to CT (return flight) was really a great experience. The cabin crew was so friendly and I enjoyed the wittiness from the head flight attended – she made us laugh so much – thank you Kulula for making my flight memorable"

  • 2014-06-27 Rating 5/5 : "After I had finished my midyear exams I decided to go make my flight reservations at Belleville Shoprite, to my surprise I got the cheapest flight I could ever imagine. I got the flight for R400 (Kulula airline) even cheaper than taking a bus. My flight was scheduled for 16h00 from Cape Town international airport, I got there 15 minutes before the departure so the consultant suggested that I take the 8pm flight because I wasn't going to make it for the 16H00.I was so hurt having to extend my stay at the airport but I had no one to blame but myself. It was said I had to pay a certain percentage but when I got there to pay they said there wasn't a need to. My flight got there in time no problems en contoured. The journey was soo comfortable and the hostesses were so friendly. We got to Lanseria in time (22H00).Had the best experience ever, seeing that it was my first experience in an aeroplane."

  • 2014-06-25 Rating 5/5 : "Hi there - we are regular flyers of the George/OR Tambo route. We always choose to fly Kulula - they are the cheapest generally speaking and there are rarely delays. This last flight we had travelled from Wasington DC via Dubai - a long haul. Needless to say we were jet lagged and had forgotten to book our seats online. We arrived at OR, were met with such friendly faces at the check in and although we were loaded baggage wise to the limit, we were given great seats, great service and a great trip to end our epic journey. Thank you Kulula for always going the extra mile for your passengers."
  • 2014-06-12 Rating 5/5 : "My last Kulula flight was in May 2014 for business, and to my delight, the flight was on time and all staff were professional and friendly. I will fly with Kulula rather than any other airline as I can log in as a discovery member and receive contribution. Kulula always offers affordable tickets, and always have clean aeroplanes. Thank you Kulula!"

  • 2014-05-30 Rating 5/5 : "So I have never flown my whole life till a month ago! When I had to go up to JHB for training at my new job, I have been to JHB before but via bus and car, that 7 hour driving is the most draining ever!. Waking up 4:00 to make my flight at 06:00 was pretty exciting, I know, need to be at the airport 2 hours prior to departure, but trust my dad to be late for everything, thought I was about to miss my flight, but I made it on time. Checked in and it was so awesome! Best experience ever, got goosebumps as we took off and landed, and of course I had the best seat in the house...window! yay, it was amazing I really enjoyed it compared to driving it was pure bliss, thanks to my company for giving me my first experience in an airline and services of Kulula, the hostess were very welcoming and friendly, as all journey starts and ends with a prayer, thankfully for the experience, and as my luck has it I will be flying again soon to Cape Town this time, cannot wait, beats driving 2 days. That is my flight experience only good things from my side, will never forget my first experience as we all don’t, but I never had any luggage so it was much better for me. Thank you Kulula!"

  • 2014-04-07 Rating 5/5 : "On the 15/03/2014 I flew to Cape town on KULULA. It was my first time flying and was so beautiful that is why Im thinking of flying again in June."

  • 2014-03-14 Rating 5/5 : "Hubby and I always fly Kulula because of the affordability - efficiency of the whole flight, how the flight attendants treat you, smile at you and assist you, it is all welcoming. We enjoy it when the Captain introduces himself and the little jokes and funnies that are made whilst speaking to the passengers just before take off. Simply enjoy watching the flight attendants with their actions when acting out and explaining what needs to be done during an emergency. Because we always fly to Durban and back we don’t really get to enjoy some drinks and snacks as this trip is way too short. We will be flying kulula this easter with or without flight discounts."

  • 2014-03-10 Rating 5/5 : "We travelled on a Kulula flight from Cape Town to Durban in August 2011 when visiting SA. I am from SA but live in Belgium. I was on the flight with my 2 children and we really enjoyed the flight because of the humour. During the safety demonstration of the life jacket the steward said the light on the life jacket was 'to shine in the sharks eyes'. The children thought this was hilarious and we all agreed that it was brilliant that an airline could be so chilled out. In Europe it's all very stiff and and the people don't have much fun in them! It was like a breath of fresh air. We will be taking 3 flights in SA this year, JNB to CT, CT to DBN and DBN to JNB."

  • 2014-02-27 Rating 5/5 : "My last flight with Kulula was amazing, I was being flow home due to being ill and was a bit scared to go on the plane being sick and all, but the air-hostesses made it the most pleasant trip ever, I spent most of the trip laughing and the time truly flew by, kulula had the kindest and funniest staff members by far and that is why they are always my first choice. I'm sure my next trip with them will be just as pleasant."

  • 2014-02-21 Rating 5/5 : "My first & last flight was from Durban to Johannesburg, I was in Awe since I boarded as it was my 1st time on a plane and I was so nervous. Then I was ushered to my seat and then the announcements were made. I looked out of the window and it felt strange, it was almost as if I was flying by myself… There were a few moments when I was really scared that the plane would just fall down, I guess that was just because I wasn’t used to the way it felt. There was one thing that stayed with me throughout the flight and that was that I was definitely going to do this again and it would be for longer and longer flights…Just when I felt so relaxed and enjoying it, the plane was about to land at O.R. Tambo and it was over. The only regret was that it over too quickly! The Airline was Kulula.com. Reason for flying was for the experience! And it was a great experience. I was on a short holiday in Durban – 5 days. Drove down with the bus and flew back. It was the 1st holiday I had ever had and I was 38 years old."

  • 2014-01-20 Rating 5/5 : "Wow, it's been so long since I was on a plane, but my very first flight ever was on Mango Airlines and the second time which was also the last time I flew was with Kulula in 2010. I haven't been since, but what I remember was that the cabin crew were very friendly, fun and helpful on both airlines. I would love to get on a plane again and fly somewhere, I actually need a holiday, staying at home on your leave is somewhat of a waste when you could be jetting off to another city and seeing it from high above in the sky before you land."

  • 2013-11-08 Rating 4/5 : "I would like to compliment Kulula on their efficient check in desks. My usual airline is Kulula but unfortunately I had to fly Mango recently.... O my, the check in was a disaster and there is absolutely no control regarding carry on luggage. I assure you, an airline makes travellers very upset if the carry on luggage is not controlled. Some of us are "obedient" and the arrogant rest just do what they want. It does not endear travellers to an airline."

  • 2013-10-04 Rating 4.9/5 : "I would like to share my experiences with the Kulula Airlines. I travel and generally only use Kulula as their flights are by far the cheapest. Its not only about being cheap, but flights are safe and you feel welcome. I travelled with them on a very early XMAS morning in 2012, and was not impressed cos the Pilot forgot to wish everyone a Merry Xmas. I left a suggestion, cos client is King, and I am sure higher management will like feedback so that they may improve on their services becoming World Class. I had no reply, but I am sure they have visited the suggestion in improving, but I needed a return call to advise me that the suggestion has been visited, or even an email. Prior, I travelled with my husband and he had not been well, the attendant that served us was advised that she needed to give us a seat with room and expansion of legs as he was tall and was uncomfortable, but that did not transpire. In fact she gave us the seats behind the comfy room space for the legs. Kulula was very kind to have called and apologized. The flight from Gauteng was late, and we where not reimbursed with even a meal voucher, just advised that flights are delayed, a little reimbursement will assist service and saying sorry. My suggestion and way forward, it takes these little things to help us with superior service. I trust that you will humbly look into these as positives in the way forward with service. Thanking you again for the safe flights".

Well, it took us 14hrs with the bus that was over booked and the passengers up in arms because everyone wanted to get on. We decided on coming back we would rather fly. The flight was not cheap as there were no specials on but he was lifted into the plane and 1 ½ hrs later we were in Durban and he felt good after the short ride back. It was a real lovely flight and the attendants were so helpful" Thanks to Kulula

  • 2013-08-01 Rating 5/5 : After a traumatic year and a life changing decision, I decided the time had come to become a little brave and venture on a holiday with my kids. Alone. I'd never travelled without my ex-husband before and it seemed a bit daunting. Nevertheless, I went online and booked tickets to Jhb from Durban online. Booking early I received a reasonable rate via kulula. Arriving at the airport the staff behind the check in counter were extremely helpful and helped to take the bags off the trolley. During the flight too the cabin crew were really friendly and kind and helped to settle the kids. A family members met us at O.R Thambo International and drove us to Mount Amanzi holiday resort near the Hartebeesport dam. There I spent the most relaxing week of my life. It was truly incredible. The setting and facilities and even the fellow guests everything made for a perfect holiday. My kids spent hours in the warm water pool while I lounged nearby with a book. It was safe and most amenities were free. Very child friendly and definitely worth it. Our flight back went smoothly as well and I'm glad I took the step to venture out of my comfort zone. It's given me the courage to travel again.

  • 2013-07-26 Rating 4/5 : I flew with Kulula.com, from OR Thambo to Cape Town (my last flight). I use Kulula.com because of the 15% discount we get because we are with Discovery Health, that normally makes them the cheapest. I am happy flying with Kulula, on a scale from 1-5, I will give them 4 out of 5 (only because the flights are delayed a lot from and to Cape Town). I will recommend them anytime.

  • 2013-07-23 Rating 4/5 : I flew to George. My house is in Dana bay about 35 km from the airport. I fly with KULULA because the people are very friendly and they are the cheapest. It is value for money.

  • 2013-07-18 Rating 4.5/5 : "The last flight (Kalula) was quite amazing - I sat in the last seat at the back of the plane, the wind was howling (I think they mentioned 60kph). I am not nervous of flying at all, however one always says a little prayer before embarking..... As we were moving down the runway the wind was tugging at the plane, it almost felt like the back of the plane moved sideways! Still the optimist I just leaned back in my chair and tried to ignore it, however it got worse once our wheels had left the runway, and carried on jumping around, and up and down until we were through the clouds. The young boy beside me turned a whiter shade of pale, while we hung on to our seats. I think that the last seat at the back probably does feel the most movement? However I could not help thinking that I would hate to be a pilot and have so many people's lives resting on your shoulders. I do commend the pilot and must say, that we had a very pleasant flight further. The funny thing and of course I had to embellish this to my children, was that the man 2 seats away from me ordered 2 bottles of wine, and the lady in front to my right took out her Bible. That was when I really thought I was in trouble! We had a good giggle at the experience, and once again commended the Pilot and crew!"

  • 2013-07-04 Rating 5/5 : "I booked a flight for myself and my Mother with Kulula to Cape Town on the 9th of March. As my Mother is 88 I also booked a wheelchair for her, as unfortunately she had had a bad fall the week before, so I had had to postpone her flight. When I arrived in Cape Town they did not let the air hostess know that the wheel chair was not needed and she was there to collect my Mom, who was not on the flight anymore. The air hostess walked on with an empty wheelchair and I was walking behind her, and there was an old man and his wife walking very slowly in front of us, the air hostess stopped and offered to take the old man in the wheelchair, he was so glad for the ride as it is quite a long distance to walk - that made me so glad to see there is still respect and love for our fellow old people that I would always recommend KULULA as the best. The flight down to Cape Town was excellent and the Captain told us interesting things to see. Needless to say I am sending my Mother down to Cape Town now on with Kulula as I know they will look after her like a piece of GOLD."

  • 2013-06-21 Rating 5/5 : "My experience was coming to Cape Town from Johannesburg on a flight with Kulula which is 5 star for me. Got to the airport on time, checked in and everything went very well and professional. So it was my 1st time flying to Cape Town. It’s really an experience you can’t really tell or explain / write but you just have to experience it yourself. One thing I loved about it was the view lifting off; man we live in a big planet. I also got a chance to work with a company called Shift making my travel experience more interesting. During my course with them we managed to visit Cape point and I must say, best site seeing in the world. The way travelling changes oneself about the way you view the world will definitely change the way you see everything. There is a big part of this world that we don’t know about but step by step when we travel we discover some of the earth secrets."

  • 2013-06-12 Rating 3/5 : "My experience with Kulula not too long ago was very unexpected. The reason I say this is because Kulula is a low cost airline and passengers flying with this airline should know not to have too high expectations when flying with them. I flew from Cape Town International airport to Lanseria airport in Gauteng and as per my previous statement, did not have any expectations flying economy class. The check-in process at Cape Town International airport was very quick and efficient. However, what bothers me is that security looked too laidback and as I am a tourism student and learn about how important security officials are at airports I was a bit concerned. It felt that the security levels should be tightened and not as casual as what I experienced. I suppose that is something CSA should look at. I boarded the aircraft and was greeted warmly by the flight attendants which made me feel somewhat comfortable and happy to be there. A very relaxed atmosphere I must say. It was a smooth flight and I enjoyed the whole duration of the flight. Would've probably been more relaxed if the seats could recline further, but then again….. economy class……. low cost airline. Lower your expectations a bit and you will have a smile on your face the whole time. We landed safely at Lanseria airport, and although the equipment to help passengers disembark took forever to get to the plane I can honestly say that the experience was acceptable. AND I had no baggage lost ;-) I personally enjoyed my experience with this airline and would most definitely make use of them again and would advise others to make use of Kulula airlines. Quick, efficient and cost effective. I would rate my experience a 3, the reason for my rating is that I knew what kind of service was expected from the airline and I wanted to get from point A to B as quick as possible, and that is exactly what Kulula provided."

Check-in was quick and easy, we left on time, the flight was packed, not one spare seat, and a bit noisy because there were a lot of kids on board (perhaps because it was a potential long weekend, if you put in leave for the Monday and Tuesday). Cabin crew were great ."

  • 2013-04-25 Rating 5/5 : "It was pitch black & pouring with rain in Johannesburg as I arrived at Lanseria International Airport for my Kulula flight to Cape Town. Lanseria looked more like a building site than an airport, as they are building another runway and busy with a lot of expansion plans. I'd accidentally booked from O.R. Tambo (with Kulula) to Cape Town, but thought I'd booked from Lanseria Airport. On arriving at Lanseria Airport there was no queue at Kulula's check-in, and as I spoke to one of Kulula's check-in gents, he mentioned that I was actually meant to be flying from O.R. Tambo, and he motioned me to their sales desk, where I met up with a very efficient guy (unfortunately I didn't catch his name) and after explaining the situation he said "no problem", and punched the buttons he needed to punch and said "ah, I'm going to waive any charges", and booked me onto the 06h00 MN451 HLA-CPT flight. I'd like to extend my gratitude to the Kulula staff on duty. Cabin staff were polite and efficient. I'm so glad that I'm booked to fly Kulula back up to Johannesburg agai. PS I was disappointed that a large number of passengers didn't bother to place their seatbelts neatly on the seats after landing in Cape Town; after being urged to do so by the Chief Stewardess, who asked so nicely, as Kulula needed a quick turnaround in Cape Town - after we disembarked we immediately heard over the loudspeakers a call for the next set of passengers to embark for their flight to Lanseria."

Flight Routes

Kulula operates flights on all the major domestic routes in South Africa, with the exception of Port Elizabeth (although its full-service sister, British Airways flies to PE) and Bloemfontein. Its main hubs are OR Tambo International Airport and Lanseria International Airport. In fact, the airline pioneered flights to Lanseria, and for a long time was the only airline flying there (it was joined by 1time airline before it went bankrupt, and then Mango Airlines). All its destinations are in South Africa, with there having been no sign of interest in flying internationally.

Flights to Cape Town:

Cape Town International Airport, whilst not an official hub, is the 3rd busiest airport for the airline, after Lanseria and OR Tambo. In fact shortly after the airline was set up in July 2001, its first flight took place on the JNB-CPT route in August 2001.

Flights to Durban:

King Shaka International Airport is the airline's 4th busiest airport.

Kulula Airline's Johannesburg to Durban flights are from both OR Tambo Airport and Lanseria Airport.

Flights to East London:

This is the most recently launched new route.

  • Johannesburg to East London Airport (from OR Tambo)

Flights to George:
  • Johannesburg to George Airport (from OR Tambo, flights from Lanseria to George have been suspended, both by Kulula and British Airways Comair)

Flights to Johannesburg:

Kulula operates flights to 2 airports in Johannesburg - OR Tambo International Airport & Lanseria Airport.

Kulula no longer flies to Port Elizabeth, but British Airways (Comair), its sister company, does.

Flights to London

Kulula does not operate flights from Johannesburg to London...yet! In August 2007 Comair applied for a licence to operate flights from Johannesburg to London (it's not clear whether Comair intended this licence for its British Airways or Kulula brand, although it would be surprising if they used the British Airways brand as this would bring it in competition with British Airways UK).

Check-In

To check-in you'll need:

  • your driver's licence or ID book (green) or passport

  • your booking reference

  • your credit card you booked with.

Kulula Airlines check-in opens 90 minutes before the scheduled departure time, and closes 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. If you don't check-in on time, then it counts as a cancellation and you lose your ticket without getting any refund (if you're running late it's essential that you phone Kulula).

You can check-in online & print your boarding pass. There are self-service machines at the airport, and you can check in with your phone.

Flight bookings with Kulula can result in you being on a Kulula-branded flight or a British Airways Comair branded flight. If your flight number starts with 'BA', then you're on a British Airways Comair flight and should go to their check-in counters, if the flight number starts with 'MN' then go to the Kulula check-in counters.

Phone Numbers

Here are Kulula's phone numbers at various airports:

Baggage allowance

In November 2011 Kulula implemented a new baggage allowance policy. Be sure to check your ticket to see if anything has changed since this page was set up.

Hand Baggage Allowance

Only one carry-on bag per person will be allowed onboard the aircraft. It must be 7kg or lighter and be smaller than 56*36*23cm. In addition, an adult can carry a small item of hand baggage like a ladies handbags, briefcase, laptop, or vanity case.

Checked Baggage Allowance

You can take 1 checked piece of luggage weighing up to 20kg. If the bag weighs more than 20kg or you have another item to check-in you will pay for it. If you're travelling as a group, this rule applies individually to each person (e.g. a couple travelling together can't have one bag weighing 21kg and another 5kg) - don't get caught out and have to scramble having to repack baggage at check-in.

  • Tip: If you regularly require more baggage then sign up for a Kulula credit card, and you'll automatically be able to take one piece which weighs 25kg.

Any piece of luggage over this weight is considered a 'heavy bag' and will be charged a 'heavy bag' fee of R350.

If you can't fit all your goodies in one bag, any additional pieces of baggage checked-in will cost an extra R300 per bag at the airport. However, with some careful planning you can save. Buy the extra bag allowance before you travel and save yourself some money.

Extra bags of 20kg

Call the Contact Centre to add an extra bag to an existing booking and save off the airport rate, or visit 'manage my bookings' online, and simply add it to your booking (this may only be done up to 2 hours before your flight). Extra baggage does not cover the carriage of pets with Kulula as these precious passengers have specific travel requirements and costs are structured separately for their safe transportation.

Very heavy bags

A bag that weighs more than 32kg, will be transported as cargo and won’t be carried on the same flight as you. The maximum dimensions are: 90cm + 73cm + 43cm ( 208cm L + W + H) - pull out that tape measure – no monster bags can be accepted.

Infant's baggage

Infants, may be small but they pack big! Infants are entitled to 1 free checked in baggage weighing up to 20kg, plus a collapsable pushchair and a child car seat for free. No additional bags may be purchased for infants.

Other Baggage Items

Non-standard baggage items such as musical instruments that are in addition to your 1 free checked bag, are charged as an extra piece of baggage. If these items weigh more than the allowed 20kg a heavy bag charge of will be levied at the airport. Pets have specific requirements for their transportation, and get treated as VIP's (Very Important Pets).

General Info

Kulula is a 100% owned subsidiary of Comair Limited, which is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE:COM). Comair is owned by the management (39%), institutions and public (38%), British Airwinays (18%) and employees (5%). Comair is also a British Ariways franchisee (hence the part ownership by British Airways).

As a JSE-listed company, Comair have to report their financial results twice a year: interim results are reported over the 6 months to 31 December, and full year results to their year-end on the 30th June. Operational results are not seperated for Kulula and British Airways, with it previously having being said that this would not make sense, as the 2 businesses are so intertwined.

For a long time Comair was run by 2 CEOs, Erik Venter and Gidon Novick; until in December 2011 the board of directors decided it only wanted one Chief Executive. Gidon Novick then resigned and Erik Venter was appointed CEO.

Other members of the Comair executive are Iain Meaker (Commercial Distribution), Martin Louw (operations), Kirsten King(finance) and Eve Liebetrau (HR).

The airline's physical Address is at 1 Marignane Drive Bonaero Park Kempton Park Johannesburg 1619 Gauteng South Africa.

Kulula Airline offers lifts to the airport through their “click a cab” facility. It's a transport service that chauffeurs you to and from the airport.

Kulula Airline bizdeals offers frequent fliers (those who spend more than R50,000 annually) the option for fixed Kulula flight fees and the ability to make last-minute changes to flight plans.

Are you looking to apply for a job with Kulula (cabin crew jobs, jobs as a pilot, etc...)? Send your CV and ask your questions at the Comair Facebook page.

Kulula's car rental partner is Europcar, and some of the Kulula planes have Europcar emblazoned over their livery. When you do your booking through the Kulula website, there is the option of reserving a vehicle with Europcar, usually at pretty reasonable rates.

Kulula's main competitors are Mango Airline, Airlink, SA Express and South African Airways (which are all government-owned). As British Airways South Africa is part of the Comair Group, it can't be viewed as being a competitor. Fastjet and Skywise Airlines are potential competitors.

Kulula's in-flight magazine is known as Khuluma, is published once a month. It is available both electronically as well as in the seat-flaps in front of each passenger on their planes. Like the rest of the brand, Khuluma is known for its humorous content, with a regular inclusion being a writeup by the Chief Executive, which is often the funniest. In the magazine you can see what snacks are on offer, and there's a regular set of articles on South Africa. Whilst you might sometimes think its theft to take an in-flight magazine along with you after the flight, Khuluma challenges you in the humour typical of the brand to "swipe me if you like me". Khuluma is published by Picasso Headline.

You can read some of the funniest, inspiring excerpts from current and past Khuluma's right here.

"Unofficial National Carrier of the you know what" : Kulula's original ad which got them into trouble with FifaIn synch with the edgy in-flight entertainment and humorous liveries, Kulula is known for their controversial advertising campaigns. In 2011 they offered "cows for Kate", saying that they would supply cows as lobola for the Royal Couple's wedding. During the 2010 Fifa World Cup they hit world headlines with their "Unofficial National Carrier of the you know what" advert. At the start of 2013 they took a shot at SAA, with an advert called the "Most South African Airways".

Fleet

The Kulula fleet is known for its bright green colours and an often humourous livery. The fleet size of 9 is comprised solely of Boeing 737-800's, which can seat up to 186 passengers. Four of the aircraft are owned, whilst the rest are leased. The airline no longer operates any Boeing 737-400's. Comair is planning for the future, and is in the process of purchasing 4 new Boeing Next Generation 737-800s, 2 of which are scheduled to arrive towards the end of 2015 and the other 2 during 2016.

  • Dec 2012 "By December 2012 the entire Kulula fleet will have been upgraded to Boeing 737-800s" quoted from Comair's Group Results to 30 June 2012

  • Dec 2011 In the 2nd half of 2011, Kulula retired 4 Boeing 737-200s, selling 3 & impairing the value of the fourth to nil, resulting in a combined capital loss of R14.7m.

  • Jul 2007 Comair signed a 5-year deal with South African Technical to maintain Kulula Airline and British Airways' planes. Previously, most of Comair's servicing had been done by Imperial's Safair (who stopped maintaining planes).

  • 28th February 2007 Kulula announces that it is going to replace its MD-82s with Boeing 737-400s by the end of 2007 (costing R90m each - Kulula Airline are buying the planes rather than leasing). The Boeing 737-400 aircraft will reduce the airline's cost per seat by 8% and allow Kulula Airline to add 160 000 additional seats into the market per annum.

The flying 101 plane is the most famous example of the typically humurous livery which the airline employs. Whislt the substance of the livery varies from plane to plane, they are all brightly coloured in green paint.
