What goes up must come down and, after you’ve landed, a rental car honestly is the best option. It's often cheaper to book your car hire together with your flights, than on a standalone basis. You can also add in accommodation to the package deal. Kulula has a reputation for being a whacky, funny and budget-friendly airline. From the airways to the roads this company aims to bring you travel options that don’t break the bank. Their catch-phrase “Full-on Travel” rings true, especially when it comes to the car hire deals. Hiring a car is often the best option when travelling locally (or even internationally) and Kulula makes it easy to organize.
Kulula have announced that they are offering a free upgrade at OR Tambo & Lanseria International Airports and have decreased car hire fares on weekends in April 2014. A pretty good deal considering all the holidays in the month. A weekend is defined a booking for at least 2 days and at most 4 days from 2pm on a Thursday to 2pm on the following Monday (cannot be more than 4 days).
Kulula offers customers the option of hiring a vehicle along with the purchase of their flights and/or accommodation. It couldn’t be easier: disembark from the runway and hop right into your rental car! In fact, if you combine flights and car hire bookings, you can end up getting 200 FREE kilometres per day and saving up to 10% off rental fares.
If you select a Kulula holiday package you can combine a variety of travel items, including car hire, and save in the process. Not only do they offer you great rates and discounts, but you can see what you would have paid had you booked everything separately. It doesn’t matter whether you are going on holiday, or travelling for business purposes – you can save time and money with all the conveniences imaginable.
Kulula’s affiliate car rental company is Europcar South Africa (part of the Imperial Group) - a well-known, award-winning and trusted agency all over the world. Who wants to have to deal with the hassles of foreign public transport, or even transport that is inadequate, inconvenient and inflexible? To help you out Kulula and Europcar have formed an alliance. This friendship will ensure that you get the most out of your stay.
The Europcar and Kulula tag-team have a myriad of vehicles to offer you. Cars groups include Group B, C, D, F, H, V, S, E, T, O and Z and range from standard to the more luxurious options (BMWs, Chevy Cruise and the Toyota Avanza). (Car types are not always available so make sure you check when making your booking!)

As expected, this travel duo has seriously great benefits to offer consumers. The most important to mention are the fact that you can get discounts for all bookings longer than six days, rates are cheaper when combo (bookings including travel items such as flights and hotels) car hire reservations are made and, that Discovery Vitality members are automatically entitled to percentage discounts off daily car hire fares.
Discovery Vitality Members get even bigger discounts. What is your Discovery Vitality Status? Car hire savings vary according to your membership. % discount on car rental rate (VAT excluded)
Apart from peace of mind that all your travel arrangements are sorted before leaving the house, the Europcar/Kulula pick-up and drop-off option allows customers, not only to collect and return their vehicle to different branches within the country, but you can even organize for the car to be delivered and collected – what a pleasure! The Ready-2-Go option is perfect for those who know that they will be pushed for time at their destination. Opting for this service will allow you to get in and out of the Europcar office in record time, make sure you have your driver’s licence and credit card handy.
Not needing a car for the entirety of your stay? No Problem. Through Kulula you can arrange a cab from Europcar to take you to or from the airport. One less thing to bother about.
Extras are available to make your journey as comfortable as possible
GPS (R87 per day)
Additional driver (R275 per additional driver)
Infant Car seat (R330)
Hand-controlled steering (R250)
Portable bike racks - accommodating up to 3 bicycles (R37 per day)
Kulula accepts major credit cards such as VISA and MasterCard for bookings and payments. More complicated bookings (involving multiple reservations – car, air and land) require a pre-payment, but otherwise optional extra’s and fees can be paid when you are done with the rental. It is a standard practice for Europcar to ask for a refundable deposit when you take out a car but, as long as you return their baby safely, this amount will be returned to your account. Kulula Moolah and Discovery miles can be used towards air travel reservations.
As far as legal cover goes, there are two options, the standard and the super waiver. The first lays down the law in terms of customer is responsibility and is the stricter version, whilst the second is a little more lenient in terms of car protection and damage. The super waiver costs more, but the cover of harm and loss is greater, the choice is yours.
Ok so you’re all set to hire a car – fantastic! You’ll need a valid driver’s licence (must have been valid for at least 2 years prior to booking), a working credit card (VISA or MasterCard) and, for special vehicle groups (F and higher), 2 working credit cards are required in addition to a cash deposit. If you’ve got all that then you are revving to go!
