Choosing between the Blue Train and Rovos Rail is the ultimate luxury dilemma. Both are regularly voted among the top luxury trains in the world, both travel the iconic Cape Town to Pretoria route, and both offer magnificent 5-star service. However, because we book hundreds of guests on these trains every year, we know they cater to very different types of travellers.

Here is our definitive, unfiltered guide to help you choose the right journey for your South African adventure.

🕰️ The "Slow Travel" Philosophy

Many first-time luxury rail travellers assume "faster is better" and lean toward The Blue Train's 2-night itinerary. However, true luxury is about time. Rovos Rail intentionally extends the Cape Town route to 4 days (3 nights), embracing the art of Slow Travel.

This extra 24 hours is not a delay - it is a feature. It allows your nervous system to fully decompress, gives you time to actually enjoy the observation car, and uniquely allows Rovos Rail to stop at both Matjiesfontein and the Kimberley Diamond Mine (The Blue Train only has time to stop at one, depending on the direction of travel). If your schedule permits, slower is infinitely better.

And the unvarnished truth is that delays are common due to the poor state of affairs of South Africa's railway network - passengers usually view this as extra time to be spent on an ultra luxury experience.

Side-by-Side Detailed Comparison

The Atmosphere & Vibe

Rovos Rail ("Digital Detox & Old World Romance"): A step back in time. The train is meticulously restored to Edwardian elegance. It is formal, quiet, and highly romantic. There is no Wi-Fi, radios, or TVs. The use of mobile phones or laptops is strictly confined to your private suite to encourage conversation in the observation car and maintain the 1920s atmosphere.

The Blue Train ("Connected Modern Luxury"): Feels like a modern, 5-star boutique hotel on wheels. It is sleek, elegant, and contemporary. Suites feature modern amenities including underfloor heating, interactive entertainment systems, and Wi-Fi, allowing for real-time sharing of your journey on social media.

Inclusions & Exclusions

Rovos Rail INCLUDES: Accommodation; all meals; all beverages on board; room service; limited laundry; guided excursions; preselected local wines, beers and soft drinks on excursions; entrance fees; government tax.

Rovos Rail EXCLUDES: International sparkling wine; gratuities; personal expenses; travel insurance.

The Blue Train INCLUDES: Accommodation; all meals; standard drinks and local wines.

The Blue Train EXCLUDES: French Champagne; premium imported liquors (like specific cognacs or single malts); gratuities; travel insurance.

The Blue Train's "Five-Star" Touches

Red-Carpet Boarding: The luxury experience is designed to start before you even board. At the Pretoria station, a literal red carpet is rolled out on the platform. Dedicated butlers wait at the station to personally greet guests, immediately taking charge of all luggage and escorting passengers to their suites.

Farewell Gifts: The pampering extends to the end of the journey to ensure a lasting impression. Passengers reported receiving high-quality, memorable keepsakes, including beautiful carriage clocks and personalised certificates commemorating the journey. Additionally, guests were allowed to keep the bespoke sherry glasses provided during the Kimberley mine excursion.

Service & Hospitality

Rovos Rail's Tailored Hospitality: Passengers who favour Rovos Rail have noted that the service felt significantly more attuned to the individual. Because Rovos Rail operates at a slower pace and often prioritises a traditional, almost colonial-era style of hospitality without the distraction of in-cabin TVs or radios, the staff interactions are frequently described as more attentive, authentic, and responsive compared to the sometimes rigid service on The Blue Train.

The Blue Train (Service Issues): A recurring theme in some negative reviews is the staff's inability to effectively resolve issues. Passengers reported waiting hours for air conditioning repairs, struggling to locate their butlers (due to missing in-suite phones), and facing a general lack of urgency. Post-trip customer care has also been criticised, with promised follow-up calls from regional management failing to materialise.

Guest Complaints (The Blue Train)

While marketed as a modern premium service, guests on The Blue Train have noted a few operational pain points:

  • Inoperable Tech & Safes: Passengers reported arriving to find the electronic safes in their suites broken. This forced them to carry expensive equipment (laptops, cameras) around the train at all times - even to formal dinners. Furthermore, in-suite televisions and decoders were found to be non-functional, with staff taking hours to provide replacement batteries or fix the systems.
  • No Wi-Fi: Despite marketing highlighting connectivity, passengers have reported that just before departure the were informed that the Wi-Fi was undergoing an "upgrade" and would be unavailable for the entire trip.
  • Loud Mechanical Noises: Engineering faults on the carriages caused loud, irregular banging noises throughout the night. Despite staff promising to fix the issue during scheduled daytime stops, the noise persisted, making sleep completely impossible for affected passengers.
  • The Cockroach Incident: One particularly damning review detailed a cockroach running across the bed. The situation was made worse by the train manager and staff, who were reportedly reluctant to strip the bed or investigate the cabin for further pests.

The Vintage Edge: The Open-Air Experience (Rovos Rail)

The Blue Train is fully sealed and climate-controlled to maintain its high-speed aerodynamics and soundproofing. Rovos Rail, conversely, leans heavily into its "Old World" vintage aesthetic by allowing passengers to physically open the windows in their suites and along the corridors. This is a massive draw for train enthusiasts and photographers, as it allows for glare-free photography, the ability to smell the South African landscape (like the distinct scent of the Karoo), and a much more tactile connection to the journey.

Yes. It is essential to understand that both Rovos Rail and The Blue Train run on tracks managed by national railway authorities across Southern Africa. They are completely reliant on the traction and railway services provided by the countries through which they travel.

Delays can and do occur due to factors outside of the operators' control, including locomotive faults, signal failures, overhead power cable damage, vandalism, electricity outages, and track maintenance. As a result, arrival and excursion times cannot be guaranteed.

Travel Tip: We strongly caution against booking same-day air travel on your departure or arrival days. Always build a buffer into your itinerary to account for potential train delays.

Are Rovos Rail and the Blue Train the most luxurious trains in the world?

Yes, both trains consistently rank among the world's most luxurious rail journeys, alongside the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in Europe and the Maharajas' Express in India.

Both luxury trains accommodate children, but they cater to very different family dynamics:

The Blue Train (Family-Friendly)

  • Ages 5 and under: May share a suite with their parents free of charge (limited to a maximum of 2 children per suite). Due to space constraints, no cots or extra mattresses can be provided, so children must share the beds. If this is an issue, we advise booking an additional suite at the applicable child rate.
  • Ages 6 to 11: Pay 50% of the adult rate and must occupy a separate suite.
  • Ages 12 and older: Pay the full adult rates.

Note: Children are not allowed in the Club Car (smoker’s area).

Rovos Rail (Adult-Oriented)

Rovos Rail accommodates children but asks parents to be sensitive to the adult nature and quiet atmosphere of the train. There are no child-minding facilities on board.

  • Ages 0 to 2: Not permitted to travel.
  • Ages 3 to 4: Not permitted in the dining and lounge cars (room service is available). They may share a Deluxe, Royal, or Emerald suite with two adults. Pay 75% of the adult per person sharing rate.
  • Ages 5 to 9: Pay 75% of the adult per person sharing rate. Must have their own suite or share with one parent.
  • Ages 10 and older: Pay the full adult rate.

Note: Long journeys are not recommended for children under 13.

What are the luggage and passport rules on Rovos Rail and The Blue Train?

The Blue Train

  • Security: All luggage is subjected to security checks and scanning prior to boarding.
  • In-Suite Luggage: Storage space in the suites is limited. It is highly advisable to pack a smaller overnight bag for the journey itself.
  • Luggage Car: Additional luggage will be stored in a dedicated Luggage Car. This is limited to a generous 50 kg per guest.
  • Valuables: While staff take great care of belongings, guests should securely lock their luggage and use the electronic lock-up safe provided in every suite for valuables.

Rovos Rail

  • The Blue Train: Offers bespoke, tailor-made charters for strategic meetings, product launches, VIP cocktail parties, breakfasts, lunches, and weddings. They can even organize specialized itineraries like a Golfing or Safari charter, or trips tailored to South African calendar events like horse-racing and music festivals (subject to rail network compatibility).
  • Rovos Rail: Scheduled journeys are available for full charter. Their 42-bed or 72-bed trains can be combined with other products for bespoke charters including incentive groups, historical expeditions, and cycling tours.
