We only show fares and availability of suites below for the 4 night Pretoria to Victoria Falls journey as it's a better deal than the 3 nighter, which costs the same; but you can select the 3 night journey in the dropdown menu if you want to pay the same for less. Both options offer excursions at the Hwange Park, but only the 4-nighter offers excursions at Matobo Park. However, the 11 night Pretoria to Victoria Falls journey is well worth consideration.

Pro tip: A 4 night Pretoria to Vic Falls luxury train trip usually costs the same as a 3 night trip; but offers you a day's extra value. Pro tip 2: WhatsApp Rovos Rob (any time of night or day) for more info and to make a reservation.
A 3 Night vs a 4 Night Expedition
Both the 3 and the 4 night journeys are scheduled to cover 1400km from Pretoria to Victoria Falls on the same track, but the 3 night journey has a delicious potential twist in that if that railway line is too busy, it will go an alternative route through Botswana so it can get to Vic Falls in 3 nights:
- It could go from Pretoria to Musina and Beitbridge to Bulawayo (a highlight of which is crossing the Limpopo River); but
- it could be routed through Botswana; starting in Pretoria and going to Mafikeng, Gaborone and Plumtree on its way to Bulawayo
On the 4 night journey there isn't the urgency to get to Bulawayo, as there's more time to spare if the railway is busy, so it goes along a set path (and not via Botswana):
- It goes from Pretoria to Bulawayo via the Musina and Beitbridge border towns.
Matobo National Park on the 4 nighter
The other major difference is that the 4 night journey has an excursion at Matobo National Park, which the 3 night journey does not have: At Matobo you can see caves where bushmen used to shelter and raw their rock art; as well as the grave of Cecil John Rhodes; which is a bit like seeing the grave of Napoleon on St Helena Island - not everybody belongs to his fanclub but it's interesting to learn about him nevertheless.
Safety of railway
At Rovos Rail, safety is at the heart of everything done. Since 1994, the Victoria Falls journey with Rovos Rail has successfully completed over 1,000 journeys without incident—until April 2025. The event in question was an isolated occurrence on a privately managed section of railway that Rovos trains have crossed safely more than 40 times since.
Every scheduled journey and charter, including those following April 2025, has run smoothly and on time.
Close enough to feel the spray
Cecil John Rhodes's instructions were that the rail bridge be built sufficiently close to Victoria Falls that passing trains be soaked by "the smoke that thunders" - "Mosi-oa-Tunya" in the vernacular.

Book to read
Without your gadgets; enjoy a book to read, like "Love in Transit - the last stop was you": which begins "Some stories begin with a hello. Others begin with a misunderstanding. When Amelia, a Black American solo traveler, boards a luxury train from Pretoria to Victoria Falls, she isn’t looking for love just a moment of stillness, and maybe a soft place to land. But everything shifts when she meets Luca, an Italian man with eyes like stories untold, and a charm that lingers like perfume in the air.Their connection is instant. Quiet. Magnetic. But not without complication. Because he isn’t traveling alone. As the train glides across golden landscapes and through velvet dining cars, what begins as possibility becomes a question of timing, truth, and what we’re willing to risk for a stranger who suddenly feels familiar." Read more on page 102 of the Aug/Sep 2025 edition of Her Voyage Mag. Even better than reading it, get your own rail romance going.
Cellphone reception
Rovos does not offer Wi-Fi on board. Expect cellphone connectivity to be sporadic. Mobile signals are strongest when the train is near major cities (Pretoria, Johannesburg area, Polokwane/Musina, Bulawayo, Victoria Falls) and major highways. Connectivity is worse in Zimbabwe; and non-existent for long stretches.
Best eSim for Zimbabwe
The local network Econet has the best and most extensive network coverage in Zimbabwe, followed by NetOne, and Telecel is the smallest of the 3. An eSIM that uses Econet is your best bet. Since Econet doesn't widely distribute their own eSIMs, the only way to get service through them digitally is via Global Data eSIM providers who have roaming agreements with Econet. There is a vast amount of disinformation and dated information on the internet, we contacted some providers directly on 29 Sep 2025 and got the following info:
- Airalo typically roams Telecel in Zimbabwe (not ideal, as it's the smallest of the 3 operators in Zimbabwe)
- At the moment, there isn’t an eSIM that covers all three of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia (only needed if crossing the border at Victoria Falls to Livingstone) together. Airalo has the "Hello Africa" eSIM, which works in both South Africa and Zambia. For Zimbabwe, an eSim is available through Airalo's local eSIM only, and the connection there is provided by Telecel.
- Getting help: Via chat on the Airalo website or on the Airalo App, via email at support@airalo.com. You can also ask questions at the Airalo subreddit.
- Do not use Nomad as whilst they offer an eSIM plans for Zimbabwe it does not cover Victoria Falls. "Our Zimbabwe eSIM uses Telecel network, not Econet. The eSIM provides 4G/5G connectivity and will automatically connect to the best local network available".
- When contacted directly in September 2025 Holafly said that "We do not currently have service in Zimbabwe".
- Maya Mobile does not have Zimbabwe listed in its countries covered.
- Alosim did not have Zimbabwe listed on their website.
- Keepgo does not have Zimbabwe listed on their website.
Things change rapidly, so double-check the network details listed on the provider's website immediately before purchase to confirm the local partner.
Address at Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls Hotel and Station, Mallet Drive, Victoria Falls
Connecting Flights
In addition to the train trip from Victoria Falls to Pretoria; connecting flights need to be booked: We strongly advise against flying on the same same day as your train departure or arrival days due to possible delays with airline flights or the train.
- Fly one-way to Victoria Falls so that there is plenty of time to spare to get to the train station by your train departure time.
- Fly/drive one-way from Pretoria to your home town at the end of the train trip; leave ample time to get to airport; as often the train is delayed.
Hotels in Victoria Falls
The most convenient option is to stay at the Victoria Falls Hotel itself; but they charge a hefty premium for that convenience and the picture postcard view from their lawns of the "smoke that thunders". There's nothing stopping you from staying a different hotel, there'll just be a longer walk from the hotel to the train station. Navigate to our list of Victoria Falls hotels for Rovos Rail passengers and find your favourite.
Crossing the borders
SA/Zimbabwe border: Expect to take a couple of hours on the South African side and a couple of hours on the Zimbabwe side. But don't sweat, enjoy the luxury. Keep your eyes open when you cross the Limpopo River, as you can sometimes see crocodiles.
Zimbabwe online immigration form
"All travellers entering Zimbabwe, including those crossing by rail, must now complete an online immigration form. This new e-Visa system permanently replaces the manual paper declaration at all border posts — including road, air, and rail crossings such as Beitbridge. What This Means for the train Guests.
- Rail borders are no longer exempt — the online e-Visa form must be completed before travel.
- Manual declaration forms or e-visas are no longer accepted.
- There is no Wi-Fi onboard the train and no immigration terminals at rail borders. Therefore, it is essential that guests complete the online form before their train journey departing from Pretoria to avoid delays at the border.
Guidance for Completing the Online Form
When prompted, please select or enter the following:
- Port of Entry : Beitbridge Border Post
- Train Number : Rovos
- Host Name : Rovos Rail
Before submitting the form, carefully review all final notices and instructions.
Click here to complete the Zimbabwe e-Visa form
(Please use a laptop or desktop — the form and visa PDF are not accessible via phone or tablet.)
Group Applications by Tour Leaders. To streamline the process:
- We suggest that each tour leader apply for the group visas under their profile, as this makes it easier to track and print the e-Visa confirmations.
- You cannot process more than 12 guests under one application reference. If you have more than 12 travellers, a new application must be started for each additional group.
Visa Payment Recommendation
We kindly request that guests pay for their visas at the border, not online, to help streamline processing and avoid complications.
Other rail options
In August 2025 there was; a relaunch of The Blue Train trips from Pretoria to Victoria Falls.
What to do in Victoria Falls
Where to book activities
Popular activities include helicopter flights over the falls and sunset cruises on the Zambesi River.
- Shearwater Victoria Falls if you are staying in Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side
- Livingstone's Adventure if you are staying in Livingstone on the Zambian side
Options where to stay
- Anantara Stanley & Livingstone Victoria Falls Hotel(Zimbabwe):
- Located in a private game reserve outside town, offering a more exclusive safari-style stay.
- Old Ursula Road in Victoria, 15 minutes from Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side.
- Requires a transfer/taxi (about 15-20 minutes) for all town activities.
- Generally stable wifi ("not the fastest, but it was reliable"); throughout the property, including in rooms.
- Do not let them book you on Livingstone's Adventures who they have a connection with, it'll be more convenient to use Shearwater Victoria Falls.
- Victoria Falls Hotel (Zimbabwe): The "Grand Old Lady." Historic, colonial elegance with private access to the Falls path and impeccable service.
- Directly opposite the Victoria Falls Train Station where Rovos Rail arrives. It also offers the iconic view of the old railway bridge in front of Victoria Falls.
- 2 Mallett Drive, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
- Unbeatable location; historic atmosphere; direct access to the Falls footpath; no need for transfers for the main sight.
- Top recommendation; but does feel "less bush".
- Wifi is available but mixed/variable in stability and speed.
- Royal Livingstone by Anantara (Zambia)
- Direct access to Victoria Falls via private entrance
- Zebras and giraffes roam the grounds
- This hotel is in Zambia. Since the itinerary starts and focuses on the Zimbabwe side (Day 2 activities), staying here would require crossing the border (and paying visa fees) every day. Not recommended if the main focus is the Zimbabwe side.
- Wifi is generally present but slow and unstable due to Zambian infrastructure.
Day 1
Most people find the Zimbabwe side offers the most expansive and iconic views of the Falls.
- 16 Nov 2025.Arrival at Victoria Falls Station, 10h00 (scheduled)`
- Your pre-booked transfer will meet you and take you to your lodge.
- Afternoon: Settle in and relax.
- Late Afternoon: Embark on a Zambezi River Sunset Cruise. This is a must-do. Enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks as you drift along the river, spotting hippos, crocodiles, elephants on the banks, and incredible birdlife. The African sunset over the water is unforgettable.
- Evening: Dinner at your lodge or at a local restaurant in town (e.g., The Lookout Café for stunning gorge views).
Day 2
- Morning: Take a guided tour of Victoria Falls. Walking through the rainforest path opposite the main falls is a sensory overload of sound and mist. A guide can share fascinating history and point out the best photo spots. Allow 2-3 hours.
- Note: November is generally the end of the dry season, meaning the water flow will be significantly lower than in the peak months (March–May). This is actually an advantage for photography (less obscuring mist) and makes the gorge features visible.
- Afternoon (Optional Activities):
- Helicopter Flight: The "Flight of Angels" gives you a jaw-dropping aerial perspective of the Falls and the Zambezi River. (Highly recommended)
- Adrenaline: Bungee jumping, gorge swing, or zip-lining from the Victoria Falls Bridge.
- Shopping: Browse the vibrant local craft markets for souvenirs.
- Evening: Experience The Boma - Dinner & Drum Show. It's a fun, interactive cultural experience with traditional Zimbabwean food, dancers, and an energetic drumming session.
Day 3
- This is a flexible day. You could:
- Visit the Zambian Side: Cross the bridge to see the Falls from a different angle.
- (if there is availability) Livingstone Island & Devil's Pool/Angel's Pool (Seasonal): If travelling between late August and early January, you may be able to swim on the very edge of the Falls in the famed Devil's Pool. This is a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Must be booked months in far in advance.
- Rhino Walk Safari: A walking safari in a private reserve to track endangered rhinos on foot.
- Relax: Simply enjoy the pool and amenities at your lodge.
Chobe Safari after Victoria Falls
Chobe National Park, Botswana (4 Nights)
- Cresta Mowana
- The most stable and reliable Wi-Fi in the area; but less in the bush just outside Kasane (doesn't rely on satellite)
- Chobe Water Villas
- Wifi is good for the bush. In-room Wi-Fi, generally stable.Via satellite.
- Chobe Game Lodge: The only permanent lodge located inside Chobe National Park on the riverfront.
- Poor wifi. Via satellite.
- Inside the national park, maximizing game viewing time and avoiding gate queues. Known for exceptional guiding and being highly eco-friendly.
- Premium price point. Less flexibility to drive outside the park/reserve.
- For a dedicated safari enthusiast focused purely on wildlife density, Chobe Game Lodge is hard to beat due to its location inside the park. Four nights here is perfect to fully immerse in the Chobe ecosystem.
- Ngoma Safari Lodge: Located outside the park in the Chobe Forest Reserve, perched on an escarpment with breathtaking panoramic views over the Chobe River floodplains.
- Poor wifi. Via satellite.
- Beautiful views from the escarpment; quieter, more exclusive setting; excellent service.
- Located outside the main park gates; transfer time to the popular Chobe Riverfront area is longer (though still very reasonable).
- Wilderness Safaris e.g.
- Wilderness Mombo
- Wilderness Savuti
Transfer to the Land of Giants
- Morning: After breakfast, your transfer vehicle will pick you up for the journey to Botswana.
- The Transfer Process:
- A Zimbabwean driver takes you on the ~1.5-hour drive to the Kazungula border post.
- You will be assisted with exit formalities for Zimbabwe.
- You cross the border
- You complete entry formalities for Botswana.
- A new Botswanan driver from your Chobe lodge or transfer company will meet you on the other side. Having separate drivers for each side is standard.
- Drive to your lodge in the Chobe region.
- Note: Kazangula is fascinating from a geographic viewpoint, as within a 150m space there are borders to 4 countries (Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia)
- Afternoon: Check in, have lunch, and head out for your very first afternoon safari activity. This could be a 4x4 game drive in Chobe National Park or a boat safari on the Chobe River.
- Evening: Return for sundowner drinks and dinner, listening to the sounds of the African bush.
