Kulula Flexible Flights

At the start of February 2013 Kulula introduced flexible tickets, which cost a bit more than standard tickets but allow you to:

• arrive at the airport before your flight and go on standby on earlier flights

• make date and time changes with the only further charge being the difference between the new and old ticket prices.

• If you finish business early and rock up at the airport early, then if there are seats available on an earlier flight you can be switched onto it at no further cost.

• If you can't make your flight you can pay a R114 administration fee for a 100% refund on a pre-cancelled flight.

• If you miss your outbound flight, your return flight is automatically cancelled. However, if you have a flexible Kulula ticket then you can pay R100 + VAT to secure your return flight.

Purchasing

Flexible tickets must be bought through Kulula's contact centre at 0861 KULULA (585852), they are not available online. Pro tip: This is something new, so if the consultant on the phone doesn't know what you're talking about, be persistent and clearly explain that you're looking for the flexible tickets which allow refunds.

Pricing

Kulula haven't advertised any pricing for the flexible tickets. So, we phoned to get some sample pricing - we asked for the price of a flexible ticket on a one-way flight from O.R. Tambo to Cape Town on the 22nd February 2013 and got the following results (prices may well have changed since we checked):

It seems the price of flexible tickets doesn't vary as much as the price of standard Kulula tickets, and the differential is therefore smallest when compared to the prices of the more expensive Kulula standard ticket prices.
