Velvet Sky airline are the cheapest, but festive season means higher travel prices, according to our weekly South African travel survey. A flight between Johannesburg and Durban which you would usually be able to pick up for around R 500 could easily cost you double that amount if you're wanting to fly close to Christmas time. Bus and train prices, which are generally quite stable and don't fluctuate by much are all a bit higher in December.
The below survey looks at flight prices from Johannesburg to Durban on 23 December 2011, leaving Jo'burg between the times of 17h29 and 20h36.

It doesn't take COP17 greenies to convince one to travel overland rather than flying - just look at the relative price - the cheapest flight is 8 times more expensive than the cheapest overland option (Shosholoza Meyl train), a record high since we've kept stats (previous record was on the 1st August 2009, when Mango's R589 fare was 7 times more expensive than Shosholoza Meyl's R80).
