Mbombela & The Lowveld Origins
When the Dutch railway company NZASM built the eastern line along the Crocodile River Valley in 1892, a station was established on the farm of the Nel family, known as Nelspruit ("Nel's stream"). The area's fertile valley floor and ample irrigation made it the second-largest citrus growing region in South Africa after Zebediela. Today known as Mbombela (716m), the capital of Mpumalanga sits on the Maputo Corridor linking the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It serves as a major hub for the Kruger Park and God’s Window in the Blyde River Canyon, named after the Drakensberg mountains ("Dragon Mountain").
Scaling the Escarpment
Between Waterval Onder (1 310m) and Emgwenya / Waterval Boven (1 471m), the route undergoes a dramatic shift from sub-tropical Lowveld to stark Highveld grasslands. NZASM engineers conquered the steep 1-in-20 gradient using a historic rack railway system. Covering 14 km of switchbacks and tunnels to ascend 208 meters above the Elands River Valley, the line opened in 1895. In 1995, President Nelson Mandela and President Chissano of Mozambique traveled the line together to mark its centenary.
Highveld Heritage & Winston Churchill's Escape
Continuing past Entokozweni (Machadodorp) and Emakhazeni (Belfast—the highest station at 1 970m), famous for trout fishing, the train heads toward Middelburg and Emalahleni (Witbank). Emalahleni is the birthplace of Rovos Rail and the center of South Africa's coal belt. In December 1900, a young Winston Churchill famously hid in an Emalahleni mineshaft as an escaping prisoner-of-war before hopping a freight train on this exact railway line to make his escape to Lourenço Marques.
