SAA plane (South African Airways)SAA flights

SAA (South African Airways) is South Africa's government owned national carrier (it owns the other government carrier, Mango airline). It offers the most comprehensive coverage of routes within South Africa, to and from South Africa. Flights are full service. SAA is a full service carrier, so do not expect the cheap flight prices one would get with the low cost carriers.

SAA flight review

25 Jul 2010. "Country Gourmet Traveller" caught a South African Airways flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg to Dakar to New York, which he describes as one of his "favourite airlines": "What I like already is that there is more leg space than in many other airlines which makes long hauls a lot easier. I was flying from Cape Town to Johannesburg and then via Dakar to New York which is a 17 hour long trip, so it is very much appreciated to have these couple of extra centimetres... The service was outstanding, the food was good, ok the sandwich was a little weak, some sloppy wrap with beef inside, nothing to write about, but then the hot meal was very good and nicely presented. The choice of course the usual beef or chicken and I opted for the chicken, very tasty and good, no complaints. The movie choice could have been a bit better, but I guess if one doesn’t fly too often it is perfectly fine. I slept quite a bit on the way so it didn’t matter too much. The service passes often with refreshments, so one is very well looked after."

Overbooking on SAA flights

Historically, SAA have compensated passengers who couldn't board an South African Airways flight as a result of overbooking. However, since the 14th October 2006 South African Airways no longer compensate their passengers who miss a flight as a result of overbooking.

SAA pilots

SAA is busy with a program aiming to increase the number of black pilots, through its accelerated programme for black cadets. Other domestic South African airlines have not shown as great an urgency to increasing the percentage of blacks amongst their crew, as South African Airways.

SAA safety

From 1970 to 2000 South African Airways flew some 1.6 million flights with 1 fatal accident (0.6 fatal events per million flights). SAA's sole fatal flight occured on the 28th November 1987; when a South African Airways 747- 200 Combi (the Helderberg), flying from Chiang Kai Shek International Airport to to Johannesburg via Mauritius, crashed during flight over the Indian Ocean, between Taiwan and South Africa, apparently as a result of a fire in the main deck cargo area. All 19 crew and 141 passengers were killed.

SAA's Skytrax ratings

SAA has a 4 star rating with Skytrax. In 2007, SAA flights were voted the best in Africa, by Skytrax.

SAA's marketing

Airline tickets are mostly sold online. Unlike major competitors like British Airways, Air France, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic and KLM; SAA has not set up affiliate marketing agreements to leverage sales on the internet. South Africans Airways' offline marketing effort has not had as much impact with members of SouthAfrica.to, as other airlines like British Airways.

Sawubona magazine

Sawubona means 'greetings' in Nguni. Sawubona is the name of South African Airways' in-flight magazine, carried on all SAA flights - international and domestic.

SAA's board

SAA's board members are much in demand by other companies! South African Airways' CEO (Khaya Ngqula) sits on 23 boards whilst their chairman (Jakes Gerwel) holds 26 directorships . In total the 10 South African Airways board members hold 136 directorships. Clearly the SAA board spend a fair chunk of their time solving other companies' problems.

British Airways versus South African Airways

In SouthAfrica.TO's experience British Airways offers superior service in terms of aircraft design, meals, check-in queues and marketing. Here's our analysis of British Airways versus South African Airways.

Mar 2004

In its financial statements to the end of March 2004, Transnet reported that it had recapitalised SAA by R6.1bn near the end of its financial year (which ended on 31 March 2004), as a result of an a fair value adjustment (2004 - R4,5 billion, 2003 – R5,3 billion) to the SAA hedge book over the previous two years. SAA had purchased currency forwards that fixed the rate at which it would exchange rands for dollars at R10.85 for a US Dollar. However, the rand strenthened against the US dollar meaning that South African Airways was paying more than market rates for its US dollars. SAA used the Transnet recapitalisation monies to closed the hedge book at a total cost of R6.0 billion by 30 June 2004.

SAA suffered a net loss of R8.7bn in the year to 31 March 2004, leaving it technically insolvent to the tune of R2.6 billion.

2001

On 4 October 2001 Swissair filed for a moratorium of debt enforcement, with the Zurich courts, which appointed a provisional Administrator over the SairGroup. The appointment of a provisional Administrator constituted an "event of default" in terms of the Shareholders Agreement between Swissair, Transnet and SAA, entitling Transnet (if not remedied) to various contractual remedies under the Shareholders Agreement including the right to terminate the shareholders agreement and reacquire Swissair's 20% shareholding in SAA at a price of 85% of the current value of such shares. Swissair acknowledged the event default and informed Transnet that it was not in a position to remedy the event default and waived any rights to be afforded a 30 day period provided for in the shareholders agreement in which to remedy the event of default. As a consequence, Transnet became entitled to terminate the Shareholders Agreement and to re-acquire the 20% in South African Airways at 85% of the Fair Value of such shares. On 2 November 2001, Transnet issued a termination notice in terms of the Shareholders Agreement of which the effect was to implement the procedure for the reacquisition by Transnet of Swissair's 20% shareholding in South African Airways. At a special Board meeting of Transnet on the 18th October 2001, it was resolved that Transnet should exercise its right to terminate the shareholders agreement and re-acquire Swissair's 20% shareholding in South African Airways. South Africa's Cabinet endorsed this strategy on 21 November 2001.

I'm sad to say but the book in staff and the staff at SAA's rebait offices are useless. We we're trying to go toe DBN on a saturday. But as per normal there was problems with our rebait tickets. Our infant ws not on a ticket and there was a double booking on one of our seats. Now it is claimed that we delaid the flight after getting off. But as we left there was still another passanger boarding. The captain and senior cabin member was informed of the fact that we were getting off. SAA's cabin crew and book ins are incompetant!!!!!

Itumeleng

Being in the customer service industry has opened my eyes to the needs of different customers. In order for any business to do well customers play a major role and keeping them happy is exactly what I have mastered. In only a few months I grew to a specialist in my field of work as I had utmost love for the product. I am a hard worker, pay attention to detail, a very good negotiator, analytical and to top it all up a master at my game. I believe that I am an asset to your company and my knowledge and expertise would make me top of my game when it comes to customer service seeing that they are a priority to me as well as your company. I would love to grow together with you to reach a common goal. Banking on your positive response Regards, Itumeleng

To whom it may concern! I would like to apply for a flight attendent vacancy, but the problem is that i do not find any website that can assist me with that! I wanted to drive to the airport the weekend and ask anyone of the SAA crew to maybe assist me but thought it would look unprofessional, but it would also look good seeing that i am willing to get off my backside and work for this great airline that SA has! and another thing is that i tried getting recruited from 'quest' but they are to incompetent to help me, so i beg of you to help me out on this one!!!! why work for a british airline if your country has an awesome airline like SAA Kind regards Deon van der Merwe

I've been on SAA flight from Capetown to Bloemfontein Saturday 20/03/2010 next to me was a person to big to fit in the seat so she took half of mine. This was very unconfortable and I suggest that you let people thats overweight pay for 2 seats so that the rest of us can also travel in comfort. I paid for my seat so why did I have to share it. The story why I have never again selected SAA to fly. During a SAA strike a few years ago I saw a mother with two small children crying at the airport at Washington. Asking her why she were crying she said they were stranded for 7days not getting flights back to South Africa. Me and my wife decided to ask the SAA counter (at Washington Airport) if we could give our tickets to her with the possibility that they could find another ticket so the 3 passengers could return home. SAA agreed and after informing us that they could not ensure that we would be helped within a few days informed us that SAA will not pay for any cost due to us handing our tickets to the lady with the small children. We agreed and with that were told to phone Delta Airlines as they will book a flight for us to travel back home on SAA. Delta later confirmed that we had a flight in three days and that we have been upgraded due to our kindness. On the said date we flew from Washington to New York to connect to our flight home. As we handed our boarding passes to the SAA counter the SAA clerk informed us that we will not be utilising the given tickets, tore them up and gave us economical tickets as he stated the plane now had place in the back for us to be seated. When informing him why the tickets have been upgraded he informed me that my story were not true and that the reason her felt that I was lying were because of the fact that Washington Airport did not have a SAA counter. I did explain to him that he could check this out because the SAA counter were only a few days old but was new and operational. He then informed me that if we wanted to go home we had to get onboard or they will close the doors and leave without us. When we return to Cape Town I have filed complaints to the CEO of SAA and in months to follow have contacted many SAA officers as I were left made a liar and this for what I believed were the true Umbuntu thing to do... Would you have left two kids crying on a airport and fly home with a smile. SORRY I COULD NOT. This proofs that who we treat others and are treated by others can have a huge impact in our lives. SAA people are still your most valued business partners, treat the with respect.

SAA is an airline to reckon with. I flew SAA earlier this year and your services are commendable. The most amazing thing is that the flight was not delayed and we arrived in time. The cabin crew are also polite & friendly. Keep it up SAA!!! I would like to know how to become part of the SA staff. I am already in the airline industry, but I feel that SAA will give me the opportunity to exploit my potential to the fullest. Thank you.

Frank

I was always proud of SAA and travelled extensively, with very few disappointments. However, when my dad had a stroke and I tried to fly next day from Durban to Cape Town to be with him, they wanted me to pay R3300 return! That was FIVE YEARS AGO! That was also the going rate from CT to London! On principal, I will never board another of their aircraft again.

Mr Cheap Flights

Hi Bongiwe, could you please supply the date of your course and the specific towns?

Bongiwe

i would like to know your flight schedule from 16th July to the 20th July from JHB and back to the ff countries:Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya, DRC, Egypt, Uganda & Zambia as we will be hosting the course that will be attendad by Prof and doctors from outside countries.

Hi Barbara. Must admit I don't know the answer to that one. Is it not on the email which they send you? Perhaps try help@flysaa.com.

I recently flew to JFK from South Africa on Aug 28th. One of my bags with all my personal belongings is lost, including personal belongings from a loved one who just passed away. Its been more than 2 weeks now and still have not heard from anyone or seen any sign of my baggage! I have not be able to get through to the baggage department and have not SPOKEN to anyone. This truly is pathetic way to treat your customers. I am beginning to understand that SAA does not care for this matter. I am now considering my duty to inform the general public about this. I've had to buy all new belongings and haven't received any compensation for this! NONE! Ive tried to call about 10 different phone numbers here in the states and none seem to work, no-one seems to get back to me, despite leaving numerous messages with my file reference number. I'm beginning to understand that SAA is trying to avoid this matter all together. I'm regretful to say, I will never, never, fly SAA ever again!

cheap flights SA

SAA tries to pull the wool over the eyes of views of their website by excluding airport taxes. Kulula Airline is doing it too (as well as Interlink). This goes against the trend in Europe, where many airlines are starting to include airport taxes.

CE GUY

What you think about saa new web page and its prices that dont include airport tax, almost caught me the other day.I think it was R189 an R524 =R713(airport tax must still be added) return jnb cpt.I came back here searched an found 1time to be the cheapest.I took the saa flight instead was few bucks more.I dont like 1time dodgy aircraft MD82 no thanks keep up the superb work

Thanks Skytrax, I've elevated SAA to their rightful 4 star rating. Good to have somebody with your knowledge here.
