1time cheapest on Easter weekend |
22 Apr 2011 flights |
1Time is offering the cheapest flight price and SA Roadlink is offering the cheapest bus trip on the Cape Town to Durban route - although nothing on the weekend of the 22nd can honestly be described as 'cheap'. We've been surveying this route since 2007, and this is the most expensive we've seen flight prices (previous most expensive flights were in our 24 Nov 2007 "Do not fly in December" survey, back in the day when Nationwide was still flying). It's also interesting that Mango Airlines is sold out, yet SAA are still selling tickets (the tickets SAA sells is on Mango flights, as South African Airways doesn't fly from Cape Town to Durban).
Here's a comparison of one-way flights, coach trips and train trips from Cape Town to Durban, leaving Cape Town between 13h44 and 20h31 on Friday the 22nd of April 2011. There's not much to choose from as far as flights go as the few airticket availabilities remaining are ridiculously pricy. Some of the bus ticket prices are also elevated, and the Shosholoza Meyl train route between Cape Town and Durban is still suspended. The prices below will change (perhaps even by the time you read this).

Karen Lawrence took a trip to Cape Town:
"I decided to go by Greyhound to Port Elizabeth where I would catch the Baz Bus and travel the Garden Route along the coast to Capetown, with a stopover in George. The bus was, unfortunately without air conditioning, but the friendly bus driver, at my request opened the vent at the roof to help vent the hot air out of the bus."
" I walked along some very deserted streets to what seemed to be the downtown core with an ornate government building and town library on the edge of the town square. With the holiday in full swing, I learned that Port Elizabeth is a town that knows how to close down to rest."
"After investigating more of what was happening on the waterfront, I realized I needed food. The big question was would I be able to find a decent vegetarian meal. I'm glad to report that the answer was yes. There was a rather upscale looking place called Cubana (tilda on the n) that looked very inviting. I was pleased to order a vegetarian fajita that was very tasty and nicely presented as well."
