Experience the unparalleled luxury of the Pride of Africa with the newly released 2028 itineraries. Whether you are traversing the dramatic landscapes of the Cape or embarking on a transcontinental epic to Dar es Salaam, Rovos Rail promises an unforgettable voyage.

The 2028 rates reflect an 8% to 14% adjustment from the previous year. Notably, the adjustments on the highly sought-after short journeys are milder than those seen in 2027, which were necessary to cover the extensive acquisition of new locomotives. The Context Behind the Fares: An Investment in Reliability

In December 2023, Transnet (South African Railways) requested that Rovos Rail operate their own locomotives within South Africa. While this mandate required a substantial capital outlay without an immediate financial return, it ultimately guarantees Rovos a far greater degree of control and operational reliability. Running an independent fleet is a considerable undertaking - exacerbated by the ongoing process of establishing service depots nationwide. Proactively addressing this, Rovos acquired a robust fleet comprising both diesel and electric locomotives. This dual capability allows for seamless transitions should overhead power issues arise during a journey, ensuring your experience remains undisturbed.

Rovos successfully absorbed these immediate operational expenses throughout 2024 and 2025; however, the rate adjustments implemented across 2026, 2027, and 2028 are a necessary reflection of these vital infrastructure investments. Additionally, operating a luxury train over long distances is highly energy-intensive. Locomotives and essential onboard services consume approximately 5000 litres of diesel per day, placing the operation at the mercy of volatile global fuel markets.

You can rest assured that Rovos remains steadfast in their commitment to their guests. There is no intention to alter the published rates for 2026 and 2027, which were confirmed well in advance, and all existing bookings will be honoured exactly as contracted. While they will keep guests informed should sustained global shifts necessitate a change, their absolute focus right now is on flawless service delivery, consistency, and preserving the magic of the journey.
