This year's Vodacom Durban July will take place on the 5th of July 2014 at the Greyville Racecourse. This event, known as "Africa's greatest horseracing event", will attract 56 000 people who will flock to the racecourse for the festivities. The winner of the main race on the day will win more than 3 million rand in prize money. Get your bets in early!

JHB to DUR travel

In this week's survey we had a look at the prices of overland travel from Johannesburg to Durban for the Durban July. Due to this travel date falling in the school holidays and being the day before this huge event, prices have increased since the last survey done on this route. The cheapest bus fare we found was offered by City to City at R260 per person, which was significantly higher than the R190 fare found on our last survey done on this route (prices will change). The exception was Shosholoza Meyl's train fares, as these have remained static for quite some time. The economy class fare remained at R140 per person when we checked (prices could change). If you would like the freedom of having your own transport during your stay in Durban, consider renting a car. Car Trawler's affordable rate of R352 for the weekend's rental will suit your pocket. Kia Picanto is cheapest car rental at King Shaka Airport

This week we surveyed the prices of car hire at Durban Airport with pick up at 21h00 on Friday the 4th of July 2014 and drop off at 13h00 on Sunday the 6th of July 2014. The cheapest option we found was R352 for a Kia Picanto or similar for the weekend's rental. Please note that prices may change.
