On 9 May 2011 I spotted this Avis car hire special for a "Fly Drive weekend".

Rates are current and subject to change (perhaps even by the time you read this).

The weekend rates are valid from a Thursday 12h00 to Monday 12h00 in all regions. A minimum 2 day rental is required and rentals do not need to include a Saturday & Sunday.

At all Airport Locations the additional weekend authorisation will be waived upon presentation of a valid airline boarding pass. Excludes Kaiser Matanzima Airport.

Why does Avis need an authorisation on your credit card?

"It is required by the banks that upon every rental which is to be debited to a credit card, authorisation is to be taken to ensure that there are sufficient funds available to pay for the rental. This authorisation is merely a hold for an amount on the credit card which is then released when the vehicle has been returned.

Due to the high risks of renting vehicles over the weekend, we take an additional authorisation to ensure that there are sufficient funds available should there be an incident with the vehicle.

What is the weekend authorisation?

For weekend rentals we take a credit card authorisation for the estimated cost of the rental plus an *additional weekend authorisation as follows:

• Inland Locations: R5 000

• Coastal Locations: R2 000

*Airport Locations - The additional weekend authorisation will be waived upon presentation of a valid airline boarding pass. Excludes Kaiser Matanzima Airport. 

What is a valid boarding pass?

The rental must take place on the same day as the flight for the boarding pass to be considered valid. The name on the boarding pass must be the same as the name of the renter."
