South African Airways flights to PE |
The elite amongst the PE accommodation options are the game farms - Lalibela Game Reserve and Kwantu Private Game Reserve. If you don't want to damage your wallet so much try the Road Lodge, in our opinion the best positioned Road Lodge in South Africa (near the beach). A recommended option is The Paxton Hotel. Other popular choices are the Shamwari Townhouse (in Summerstrand) and the Forest Hall Guest House (in Walmer). |
Cheap Flights to Port Elizabeth
Take your pick : Regular flights to Port Elizabeth International Airport (PLZ) are operated by all of SA Express, British Airways, Mango Airlines (no more Mango flights from the 15th of October 2015), South African Airways, FlySafair and Airlink. It's only Kulula Airlines who are missing from the list of the usual suspects ;) To get on a cheap flight to Port Elizabeth use the flight price comparison tool on the left.
Amazing! : There were 16.97% more passengers on flights to PE in December 2014 than in December 2013. The huge jump in passengers is thanks to FlySafair who started flying to PE in December from CPT and JNB.
Port Elizabeth Airport
Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ) is situated on the southern end of Port Elizabeth, some ten minutes from the city centre - its street address is Alister Miller Drive, Walmer, 6065. After OR Tambo, Cape Town and King Shaka; it is the 4th busiest airport in South Africa.
The airport unfortunately has no lockers to store luggage in.
Getting from the Airport
Because of the poor state of public transport, most people travelling to PE hire a car. PE Airport car hire options include Avis, Budget, Europcar, First Car Rental, Tempest and Thrifty.
The airport is fairly close to the city and Summerstrand, for instance it only takes 10 minutes to drive the 6km from PLZ to the Protea Hotel Marine : head northeast, at the traffic circle take the 2nd exit into Allister Miller Drive, turn right into La Roche Drive, turn right into Beach Road and continue onto Marine Drive.

30 October 2014. South Africa's new low cost carrier FlySafair, have started flying into Port Elizabeth from Cape Town. They are the second low cost carrier to fly into the windy city after Mango Airlines started flying to PE 2 years ago. Let's hope that this leads to bigger and better things for the tourism industry in Port Elizabeth.

1time Flight to PE for Deep Sea Fishing
30 Nov 2013. My favorite holiday began on a Thursday when my boyfriend decided he felt like deep sea fishing - so we packed and that afternoon we caught a flight to Port Elizabeth. We were picked up by the guesthouse where we stayed and the Friday morning at 04h00 we were on our way to do some serious fishing. We returned 15h30 with me, a first timer at deep-sea fishing with the most fish (9) and the best and most variety of fish. I was also the only woman on that boat out of 7 of us - they all called it first time luck. That was the best and most memorable holiday for me. We flew with 1time and the service was good so I I'll rate them 5 because it was good and the pilots were good and experienced. Anita Bekker
Beaches - Schoenmakerskop & Sardinia Bay

24 Nov 2013. I still maintain that Port Elizabeth is one of the most underrated holiday destinations in South Africa and it is definitely not getting the attention and exposure it deserves. I used to go there over many years on short business trips with not much time to really explore and except for the local people which always impressed me with their calm and friendly nature and warm hospitality I never really considered PE as a perfect holiday destination (maybe something to do with the wind). Five years ago my son and his family moved to PE and in visiting them we really started appreciating what the Friendly City and environs has to offer. Apart from the very rich and interesting history surrounding the town there is so much more to experience in the immediate vicinity ranging from quaint, tucked away beaches like Schoenmakerskop, Sardinia Bay where Nature is defeating the human invasion and Maitlands where sand boarding and paragliding from the humongous dunes provides hours of pleasure. The city itself has so much to offer in terms of shopping and entertainment and the beaches are absolutely a pleasure to frequent on the “goodweatherdays”. Once there and relaxing it is easy to strike a good balance between outdoor and indoor activities by planning in accordance with prevailing weather conditions rather than days in advance. Well within striking distance for day trips are nature reserves such as Kragga Kamma, Addo plus a few more and the astonishing beauty of the Tsitsikama region (Storms River, Bloukrans, Natures Valley). I experienced both road and air travelling between Gauteng and PE. When taking on the road option it can also be quite an experience staying over in little towns on the way such as Gariep, Colesberg, Middelburg, Cradock and Graaff Reinet and making some time to explore these interesting and rich in history places. My next road trip may even be planned over three days to experience more of what the route has to offer. My last eight day visit to the kids was a fly in experience, with Mango from ORT to PE, which in turn gives you more time to spend at your destination. I have in the past used all carriers between Gauteng and PE: SAA, BA, OneTime, Kulula, Mango and never had any bad experience with any. I do however have one question........why are there no flights between Lanseria and PE? Okkie Vermeulen

17 Nov 2013. A Windy Holiday in PE : After much planning I decided to take my 2 daughters to the east coast on holiday. Coming from Muizenberg I thought I knew all about wind, but the whole 4 days we were in Port Elizabeth the wind blew gale force without stopping –every day we went to swim and everyday it was so windy. Lucky for us coming from windy Muizenberg we were used to wind, but the other visitors on the beach mostly from Gauteng were so amazed at these kids swimming in the wind - they thought we were quite mad. The kids enjoyed themselves tremendously and Port Elizabeth is such a beautiful city with such a lot of places to explore, which we did, and we all said we are going back again there one day on holiday. 14 Nov 2013. I would have to say Port Elizabeth has to be one of my favorite holiday destinations in South Africa. Why? Well simply because I come from there and my favorite people live there…my family. This wouldn’t be my only reason though - of course it’s not called the friendly city for nothing! You have to visit visit Port Elizabeth to understand this statement. After relocating to Gauteng almost two years ago I miss this seaside city terribly! My favorite holidays of course includes visiting the beautiful beaches (I reckon they are some of the cleanest in SA and I’m not just being biased), or just relaxing and having a meal on the beachfront, which is completely transformed at night. I also love the nearby wildlife available like Addo Elephant National Park, but nothing beats Christmas time just relaxing with family! Every time I have an opportunity to fly down it’s a real treat (and I say opportunity because I think, like everyone, the high flight fares have very much taken their toll on everyone in the last year… ). Generally because I cannot wait to see my family, the average 1 hour and fifteen minute quick flight always seems to take forever for me, because I cannot wait to get there. What has helped though is I’ve always been lucky enough to have pleasant flight experiences and friendly staff which just makes the flight that much quicker, also making it a great time to relax before my holiday begins! This lively city had so much to do from day to night for all ages. The beaches there are clean and perfect to spend the day on with the family. I loved it. I would visit P.E anytime. "The Park is 7,500 hectares and boast of many wild animals and just on our trip to the lodge we saw zebra, springbocks, wildebeest, eland, impala and just as we were almost to the lodge we saw a small herd of elephants, with a very large male who was in ‘musk’ for the first time and he decided that he was going to show us he was the boss and charged us a number of times as we reversed rapidly up the hill. Matilda who was next to the driver and right in the charging line grabbed out her bottle of duty free whisky and after a gulp, she passed it around to the rest of the vehicle."
