SAA Flights to Beijing
CANCELLED! After years of struggling with this loss making route which the government was reportedly forcing them to keep, SAA announced they will stop flying the route from the end of April 2015. Air China will be taking over the direct flights from Johannesburg to Beijing from the beginning of May 2015. This is part of SAA's 90 day turnaround strategy.
- 1 May 2014 : Flight SA288 on Mondays is now leaving OR Tambo 4 hours earlier at 20h15 and landing in Beijing at 16h45, whilst on Tuesdays & Thursdays it takes off at 20h35 and lands at 17h05.
South African Airways operates direct flights from Johannesburg to Beijing (JNB to PEK), which are scheduled to take about 15 hours. The codeshare which Air China offers, which is exactly the same flight SA288, is sometimes cheaper!
Planes used are Airbus A340-600s and A340-300s (flies 295 passengers).

Flight Review
2013-07-25. Rating 4/5 : Travelling from Cape Town to Beijing on an SAA flight was a fantastic experience for me. I managed to get a reasonably priced return ticket, but the prospect of a 4 hour stop over in Johannesburg to catch a midnight flight in July out of O.R Tambo seemed to be daunting. I, however, wandered around the airport for a while and before I knew it I was ready for the flight. Upon boarding the fabulous Airbus I truly felt at home, the air hosts were simply magnificent and the few South Africans travelling to Beijing were just as wonderful. They had served us dinner after take-off which was sumptous, and I later got stuck in into a few movies. Nonetheless, I'm not the kind of passenger that sleeps on a plane as I find it nearly impossible to sit and sleep, so I wandered around the plane looking for someone to chat with, which I didn't. I then made my way to the air hosts area and to my surprise I found them to be in good spirits, which kind of made it easy for me to chat with them. They were simply amazing as we spoke about almost anything, and I was served with coffee and snacks, and a few chocolates too which I love eating. As a person that was travelling alone this really made it so comfortable for me. I must say that SAA's Air Hosts are just as fantastic as most other international Airlines, as I had a similar experience on my return leg. Keep it up SAA . Mohamed Asmal.

Flight Schedule
Flight SA288 is scheduled to fly from OR Tambo International Airport to Beijing on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Flights are scheduled to leave JNB at 00h30 and arrive in Beijing at 20h50.
The return flight, SA289, is scheduled to leave Beijing at 23h20 and land at OR Tambo at 08h10. It also flies on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays.
