Avis are offering the cheapest car rentals we've seen in the last year (and in fact since we started surveying the car hire market - we've been surveying car rentals in Durban since 2 Feb 2008). They're offering a group A vehicle (VW Chico or similar) for a weekend for R321. Now, whilst this particular survey was for rentals from Durban International Airport, it was also a record cheap price that we've see in Durban, Cape Town or Johannesburg.

Quotes were for the weekend from 2100 on the 13th Feb 2009 until 1300 on the 15th Feb 2009.
Johannesburg to Cape Town on 1 tank of petrol
Stan aimed to drive his Toyota Prius from Johannesburg to Cape Town on a single tank of petrol, which would require a fuel efficiency of 3.8l/100km (i.e. even better than my Toyota Yaris Spirit, which sips 5l of petrol per 100km). The Prius averaged 3.9l/100km, with getting out of Johannesburg costing 5l/100km and a cold morning start in Bloemfontein also being heavy on fuel. In fuel and tolls its cost Stan R642 to get from Johannesburg to Cape Town, which is a bit more than what a 1time flight cost on their recent specials (R389).
