15 Oct. 2013 E-tolling raises car rental prices
Johannesburg - The controversial e-tolls bills, effective from 25th September, could possibly send up car rental rates by up to 10%.
According to Marc Corcoran, the president of the South African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Agency (Savrala), the yet to be decided tarrifs are likely to affect both international and domestic customers renting cars in South Africa.
Gauteng Tourism spokesperson, Barba Gaoganediwe, says the e-tolls will be similar to any toll gate or traffic fines and that car rental companies should bill tourists renting cars for these fees.
Dan Nathan Jones, CEO of Europcar has confirmed that "a gazetted fee per toll gantry passed plus an administration fee per gantry" will be inculded on the renting client's invoice. Billing could also be delayed by an additional 24 hours due to SANRAL processing and a required transaction validation period.
This solution is applicable only to the Gauteng Open Road Tolling (GORT) system and customers would still pay normal road levies throughout the country. An increase in deposits to cater for e-toll effects on tourism can be expected.
