South African Airways is by far the biggest airline operating on the busiest flight route in South Africa (and 10th busiest in the world). SAA flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town are the orginal deal - they started flying the route while British Airways Comair, Mango Airlines and Kulula were many dreams from reality. The airline offers a full-service flight, and as such its main competitor on the route is British Airways Comair.
All flights take off from OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) and land at Cape Town International Airport (CPT). South African Airways operates no flights from Lanseria International Airport.
The airline operates 127 flights a week from JNB to CPT, with Fridays being the busiest day of the week with 20 flights, and Saturday the quietest with 14 flights. Flights are generally in Boeing 737-800's. Be aware that when booking on SAA's website, you will also be shown all the codeshare options with Mango Airlines (Code JE) - just click on the price to see which airline it is for.

11 August 2013. Rating 4.5/5. Why the Standard Bank lounge at OR Tambo International Airport is not jam-packed, I do not understand! After dodging the folk trying to shine your shoes after the security check-in, we got offered a free shoe-shine at the Standard Bank lounge, and free wifi as well as free tea/coffee. Entrance is also free...I don't even bank at Standard Bank! Keep an eye out for it as you go through security on your left (near gate C13). It also has a decent view of the planes and the staff are uber friendly. Very very well done, Standard Bank.
We boarded a South African Airways A340-200 for our flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town - plane has a 2-4-2 economy class configuration (except right at the back where it is 2-3-2) and we sat in 2 seats behind each other, so each had a window seat or an aisle seat, except for our infant who sat on Mommy's lap. SAA The cabin crew were polite and friendly. The only reason I don't score SAA 5/5 for this flight is because the food wasn't the best I've had - I ordered vegeterian lacto/ovo, and they gave a roll with lettuce & tomato in the middle, and a muffin (it's entirely possible that the standard fare is a lot better). The other passengers were really friendly, helping us entertain our infant. In fact, a lot of the passengers were foreigners, as the SAA flight was codeshared by Virgin Atlantic, Luthansa and United Airlines. Rob Baker
Johannesburg to Cape Town (JNB-CPT) is the busiest flight route in South Africa. SAA only operates flights from OR Tambo to Cape Town, not Lanseria to Cape Town (only Mango & Kulula Airlines operate that route):
