SAA Flights from Durban to Cape Town

Yes, you can book SAA flights from Durban to Cape Town on the South African Airways website, but no, there aren't any SAA flights! The flights you'll be booking are codeshare arrangements with fellow state-owned airlines - Mango Airlines and SA Express (between the 2 of them there are 55 DUR-CPT flights a week). SAA is kind of like a travel agent, selling their flights on its website and under its flight numbers.

The last time that SAA flew from Durban to Cape Town in their own colours was all the way back on the 31st October 2010.

SAA May Restart DUR-CPT Flights

• 25 February 2014 : South African Airways are thinking about relaunching their King Shaka to CPT flights, with the Chair of the airline, Dudu Myeni, reported as saying that they had "made a mistake by just closing the route altogether" and that they should have perhaps rather have reduced the frequencies. The airline took the entire travel industry by surprise when it stopped flying the route in 2010, as it was assumed to be sacrosanct for a major player to be operating on all legs of the golden triangle, between Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Be Aware of What You're Booking

So, if you don't want to fly a budget carrier then keep an eye out for the fine-print to be sure you select SA Express (the flight numbers less than 2000 are SA Express and those over 2000 are Mango Airliens). The Mango flights are in Boeing 737-800s with in-flight Wi-Fi, whilst SAX flights are in smaller Bombardier CRJ200 jets.
