RwandAir Flights from Johannesburg

RwandAir is Rwanda's flag carrier and operates flights in Africa that usually includes a stop-over in Kigali, where they are based. They are renowned for their affordable airfares into Africa. Rwandair is owned by the state of Rwanda and operates Boeing 737-700 aircraft on the Johannesburg to Kigali flight route.

They operate flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town into Africa.

  • 04 Jun 2015. Iata membership has been given to RwandAir after the airline received an IOSA certificate in December 2014. The airline will now apply for the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations certificate. They hope to complete the process by June of next year. The airline has started offering a free night’s accommodation in Kigali for passengers from Accra, Lagos, Brazzaville and Libreville who are connecting through Kigali.

  • 09 Jan 2014. RwandAir will start operating direct flights between Johannesburg and Lusaka from 28 March 2015. Flight WB101 from Johannesburg will depart OR Tambo at 07h45 and arrive in Lusaka at 09h45 every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The return flight from Lusaka will leave at 21h50 and land in Johannesburg at 23h50 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The airline will be using a B737-700 aircraft on the route.

  • 02 Oct 2014. Kamembe International Airport in Rwanda will be closed from the 1st of November until the end of March 2015 due to renovations on the runway. The airline has confirmed that their main concern is passenger safety and they appologize for the inconvenience caused.

  • 28 Jan 2014. Jean Paul Muvunyi is handed his 4 bars, becoming the first Rwandan captain on their Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen planes. A proud moment for the country. This follows Bosco Murabukirwa becoming the 1st Rwandan pilot ever to attain the rank of Captain with Rwandair in December 2013, and the first Rwandan ever to be a Captain on a B737.

  • 7 Nov 2013. RwandAir and SAA have concluded a codeshare agreement, whereby SAA will sell Rwandair flights to Kigali on its booking engine. “O.R. Tambo International Airport is a well known hub for most African and world travellers. But to date we do not have many optimal hubs within the region that support the network of multiple airlines. This codeshare agreement helps us develop Kigali as a new hub, furthermore connecting it with other existing hubs like ORTIA and allowing the two airlines to join their respective networks.” said John Mirenge, Chief Exec of RwandAir

  • 19 Jun 2013. RwandAir announces that they have suspended flights to Douala, in the DRC.

  • RwandAir's Ghana expansion: On 8 June 2013 RwandAir commenced 5-weekly flights from Kigali to Accra (Ghana) in B737-800NG planes, creating 1-stop options for South Africans flying from Johannesburg to Accra, via Kigali. "We expect to carry 260 passengers per week in a connection via Lagos," said Robert Nsinga, RwandAir's marketing manager. “Rwanda is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, with double digits  over the past few years. We see ourselves as a key player. We’re hoping to grow particularly through sharpening our connections between East and West Africa. The new schedule allows us to expand, add new destinations and develop our airline and the base airport as transit hub. We will be welcoming many more visitors to our country.” said John Mirenge, the CEO of RwandAir.

  • 1 June 2013. RwandAir introduces Wednesday & Saturday flights to Johannesburg from Kigali, scheduled to leave at 18h40 and land in JNB at 22h30 (the return flight from JNB to Kigali are scheduled to leave at 08h30 and land in Kigali at 12h20).
