The Flying Kangaroo, as Qantas Airlines is affectionately known, operates direct flights from Johannesburg to Sydney - the only Qantas flights from Africa (and it's only SAA that also connects Australia with direct flights to Africa). Qantas uses B747s on the routes, the 2nd largest plane in the world after the A380, so expect lots of company on board. Congrats to Qantas on being named among the top 20 airlines in the world.

  • 27 Feb 2014. Qantas have announced that they'll be going on a large-scale retrenchment program, in a bid to stem the losses they are suffering, and reduce their cost base to a similar level to that of their competitiors. Butterflies in my Tummy

2013-05-17 Rating 5/5 : Butterflies in my tummy, heart racing like Oscar Pistorius doing his legendary 100m sprints. I'm ecstatic, I've been in an aeroplane before, not once but several times. I can't explain these feelings but I know I can't wait to get in the Qantas to Australia. My first international flight and I'm as excited as a baby in a candy store.
Getting on a twelve hour plane with my mom who was five months pregnant at the time was an experience of a lifetime. Take off was intriguing, I was fascinated by the decreasing size of all things that made me feel minute as our altitude increased. We were flying economy class but the service was first class. The flight attendants were
professional,  friendly, polite and helpful. They were efficient in providing their service and spoke to all passengers with a smile and patience. The entertainment on the aeroplane catered for all people. There were cartoons from Disney Channel for children, popular TV series episodes for young females, action movies for the males and soapies for those who love a twist to their stories. Three meals were provided throughout the course of the flight which made my mothers food taste like that of a high school boarding house. Beverages both hot and cold were being offered and they too catered for the young and old. We were all provided with pillows, socks and fleece blankets to ensure that we had a peaceful rest in our seats. Toothbrushes and toothpaste were also provided to make sure that no one felt any discomfort due to bad mouth odours. Movies often scare people due to the horrific scenes where planes are portrayed as serial killers but we  experienced no turbulence and I felt  like i was being rocked to sleep. I rate Qantas Australian
Airways as a 5 star airline, where flying is an experience for all people, the faint-hearted included.

Overweight and teased by my colleagues

2013-05-17 Rating 5/5 : Jessica rated Qantas five out five for her flight from Johannesburg to Australia: "We arrived at the international departures....come the time to weigh the luggage it was 33kgs....so everyone was embarrassed but I did not know what it meant. Money was demanded from my boss to pay for the extra kilo....but the airport cashier could read through my smile that airport luggage rules had not been highlighted to me. She noticed that we were travelling in a group of 7 and suggested that we should combine the luggage as others were traveling light. Ow, being teased by my colleagues all the way to boarding, telling me that I have brought umleqwa "home slaughtered cornish hen" and idombolo "homemade dumplings". I was so annoyed and embarrassed."
