Lufthansa Johannesburg to Barcelona

We have booked our tickets with Lufthansa from Johannesburg to Barcelona, via Frankfurt, and will be carrying out a review of their services at the end of September 2011. Total price is R14739 for 2 adults, a toddler and an infant. Watch this space!

A380 awesomeness

The flight was in Lufthansa's Airbus A380, a massive bird. I was left in awe as I watched its engine roar and lift its massive weight off the ground in the thin air of the Highveld. We were seated near the back, and had much more space than I'm used to in economy class. There was aa bassinet for our infant, and our toddler chose to sleep on the floor at our feet! Lufthansa offered a wide variety of movies, although only one cartoon for the toddlers to enjoy.

Lufthansa know how to look after children

In my experience in South Africa 1time looks after the children pax the best with their free kiddies pack. However, they don't have anything which is suitable for the tiny tots - little infants - I was impressed that Lufthansa differentiates between toddllers, who get a colouring in book, and infants who get a little fluffy toy which looks like a Lufthansa plane.

Check-in with the machine

In South Africa we are giving the option to do an online check-in, but at Barcelona Airport you couldn't join the check-in queue with Lufthansa unless you had already issued yourself a ticket at their kiosks, so the check-in was solely about processing baggage. This worked quite well, as the queue was short.

Snacks are an area to improve upon

Lufthansa can do better with their snacks - on our Frankfurt to Barcelona hop we got a bun with butter on it and nothing else. On the return flight from Barcelona to Frankfurt there was meat on the roll, and no alternative option for us vegetarians (the attendant told me that it's only on flights longer than 180 minutes that Lufthansa offer an option). All of SA Express, SA Airlink, SAA and BA do better than that in South Africa. Even the low cost carriers have better food, although you do have to pay for it.

Catalan

Learn a few words of Catalan before visting Barcelona, you wont regret it. I was proud that I understood the first two words spoken to me - "Hola, momento" - but was completely lost after that.
