Kulula Travel Holidays

So, you've wizened up to the fact that it's cheaper to book package holidays all inclusive of car rentals, flights & accommodation? Kulula Travel offers holiday packages including flights, car rentals and accommodation. Whilst they also cater for land only holidays in Thailand (a very popular destination for South Africans), most holidays kick off with a flight - these can originate in Cape Town, Durban, East London, George, Johannesburg or at Lanseria Airport.

Naturally, as the name implies, the flights they offer focus on Kulula Airlines, and being a member of the Comair group they also concentrate on British Airways Comair flights. However, they do sometimes but not always also offer the option to change flights to competitor airlines like South African Airways.

Car Hire

Headline prices are typically quoted including Group T vehicles (think Kia Picanto without air-conditioning) with Standard Cover from Europcar (their fellow partner in greenship), with 200km per day free. They offer the option to upgrade (not mahala I'm afraid, it comes at an extra price) to Group B (think Kia Picanto with air-conditioning), D (think Chev Aveo), V (think Toyota Avanza) or S (think Hyundai ix35); and to select Super Cover. Note that you will need a credit card to hire a vehicle.

Kulula holidays offered are to Botswana, Cape Town, the Drakensberg, Durban, East London, the Garden Route, Johannesburg (yes, some people holiday in Jozi!), the Kruger, Lanseria, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Northern Natal, Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay, Victoria Falls, Winelands and Zambia. You can also specify that you want to look at the choices of Malaria-free areas.

You can also select the type of holiday you want : adventure, beach holidays, bush, City Hotel, families, Outdoor, Protea (the hotel group, and you'll find that a lot of the options are with them), romance, specials, Tsogo Sun (definitely the hotel group!).

There are Kulula packages ranging from 2 nights to 7 nights. The number of meals for free varies by hotel chosen.

Cape Town

There are Kulula flights to Cape Town (click here for details) from Durban, OR Tambo and Lanseria; and British Airways Comair flights to Cape Town from OR Tambo, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

Cape Town is the city for which Kulula Travel has the most longest list of hotel options. But, be aware that some of the accommodation options listed under "Cape Town" are a good 2 or 3 hour drive from the city. Accommodation options are Abalone House (so named to get first in this alphabetical list!), African Pride 15 on Orange, African Pride Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa, The Ambassador Hotel, Aquarius Suites, Arniston Spa Hotel (note that this is a 2 hour drive from Cape Town), The Ambassador Hotel, Adderley Hotel, The Bantry Bay Luxury Suites, The BayHotel, Burgundy Luxury Apartments, Bushman's Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Retreat, Camps Bay Resort, Cape Grace, Cape Royale, Cape Town Lodge, Cape Town Hollow, The Charles (Somerset West), Circa on the Square, The Commodore, The Crystal, De Waterkant House, Dolphin Beach Hotel, The Farmhouse Hotel, The Glen Apartments, Hilton Cape Town City Centre, Hollow on the Square, Hotel on St George, The Hyde, Lagoon Beach Hotel, La Splendida Hotel, Lawhill Luxury Apartments, Leisure Bay Luxury Suites, Mandela Rhodes Place, Mouille Point Village, Ocean Shores, One and Only, Pepper Club Luxury Hotel & Spa, The Portswood, Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge, Protea Hotel Cape Castle, Protea Hotel Durbanville, Protea Hotel Fire & Ice, Protea Hotel North Wharf, Protea Hotel President, Protea Hotel Saldanha (another which is a long drive from the city), Protea Hotel Sea Point, Rockwell All Suite Hotel, Protea Hotel Victoria Junction, Protea Hotel Island Club (next to Canal Walk, so perfect for a shopping holiday), Queen Victoria Hotel, Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, Simon's Town Quayside Hotel, The Twelve Apostels Hotel & Spa, Townhouse Hotel, Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel, The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, Victoria & Alfred Hotel, Vineyard Hotel & Spa, Waterfront Village and Winchester Mansions.

Many people more think of Johannesburg as a spot they might get shot, rather than a holiday destination. This is all urban myth, 99.9% of people get out of Jozi unscathed, and there are plenty of interesting cultural, city slicker and wildlife (non-human) activities.

You kick off with a Kulula flight to Johannesburg from either Durban or Cape Town; or from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg with British Airways Comair. Hotel options are the Greenway Woods, the Protea Hotel Hazyview, the Protea Hotel The Winkler, Casa Do Sol Hotel & Resort, Protea Hotel Kruger Gate, Makalali Private Game Lodge and the Motswari Private Game Reserve.

Malaria-Free Areas

This is an interesting categorisation, as it's not immediately obvious what areas are being referred to (most of South Africa is malaria free), which adds some mystique to the choice. Hotels included are Bakubung Bush Lodge (Pilanesberg), Clifftop Exclusive Safari Hideaway (Wlgevonden), Critchley Hackle Lodge (Dullstroom), Dunkeld Country Estate (Dullstroom), Esiweni Lodge (Sundays River), The Highlander (Dullstroom), Mabula Game Lodge (Limpopo), Madikwe River Lodge (Groot Marico River), Mziki Safari Lodge (North West), Protea Hotel The Ranch (20 minutes outside Polokwane), Protea Zembula Lodge (Waterberg), Shamwari Long Lee Manor, Thakadu River Camp Lodge (Botswana border), Thandeka Lodge (Waterberg) and Tshukudu Bush Lodge (Pilanesberg).

Kulula Travel

Kulula Travel uses the same online reservation system as the erstwhile 1Time Holidays - RWA’s Sell-It Suite reservation system. The system links car rentals and hotel prices with Kulula's live flight prices.

This news section about Kulula Travel Holidays is so old, that we are thinking of renaming it "history"!

  • 13 Feb 2012. The Advertising Standards Authority dismisses a complaint against Kulula, that his holiday package to Maputo had R2251 added to it for taxes; as the advertised price was for flights from Lanseria, and the complainant had booked from O.R. Tambo.

  • 27 Aug 2008. Kulula launches 3 subbrands - Kulula Travel, Kulula Connect and Kulula Air. “We have used RWA’s Sell-it technology for the last 8 months and it is proving itself time and again. It’s reliable and simple and effective to use. We have run some high volume
promotions and are certainly impressed with the system’s ability to handle volume and the ability it provides for our customers to find and book the deal. We are very happy with the partnership we have and enjoy working with a professional outfit that listens and adjusts to their customer’s needs.” Iain Meaker, Kulula Travel's Head of Distribution and Travel.

  • 5 Jan 2008. launches Kulula Holidays (later to be rebranded Kulula Travel), using RWA’s Sell-It Suite reservation system. “We did our homework in this regard. The Sell-It system gives us the ability to present a brochure of product that our customers can browse across a number of decision variables. The beauty is, once presented with the many pricing, hotel and length of stay options, customers can then immediately book. The system does all of this exceptionally quickly and efficiently. We have built a travel package business from scratch. The systems automation front and back has allowed so many labour intensive processes to be fully automated, allowing us to focus on what really matters, content, pricing and products. We have a small and focussed team managing a big business.” Iain Meaker, Kulula head of Travel and Distribution. “Our growth strategy has included looking at a number of ancillary revenue opportunities. We needed to enhance our hotel and car hire offering, with the ability to pre-package inventory in conjunction with our partners. Sell-It has helped us achieve exactly that. We are very excited about our future prospects in this space …….. is South Africa’s largest online retailer and our customers expect the best interfaces and technology options when purchasing. They trust our brand and have been demanding more services. Sell-It has helped us deliver” Gidon Novick, Joint CEO of Comair Limited (the company running the Kulula and British Airways brands in
    South Africa).
