It and Europcar (South Africa) are both part of the Imperial Holdings Group (a company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange). Its major competitors are First Car Rental, Avis, Budget and Hertz. 24 Oct 2013 : Tempest has recently appointed Ignite Joe Public as their official communication agency. CEO of Tempest, Leslie Matthews feels Ignite Joe are on the same page with how they want to take on challenges and achieve goals and that they will come up with innovative ideas that will "shake up the car rental industry." Joe Public MD, Tiaan van Jaarsveld, said that they are "excited to be breathing new life into this iconic South African brand with some fresh thinking that will make a real difference to their business."
Oct 2011 : Tempest are now allowing customers to book with a debit card (or credit car/cheque card) at any of their branches country widel. Customers should ensure that their floor limit on their card is high enough for Tempest to take the liability amount for their rental. .

26 May 2011 : A car thief, who had been on the run since March 2008 for the theft of 18 vehicles, is arrested in Soweto. He is alleged to have stolen car vouchers from the company where he worked, used them to rent vehicles from Tempest, and then hired out the cars from his own vehicle hire company.
June 2010 : Tempest Car Hire & Kia brand 6 Kia Picantos with footballs to celebrate the Fifa World Cup taking place in South Africa, and offered customers who drove the branded vehicles a discounted price (no longer available).

1 Oct 2008 : Tempest Sixt announces that it has teamed up with PopEye Wrap-A-Rental Media (Pty) Ltd to place marketing paraphernalia into the Tempest Sixt fleet, and to brand some of the cars (initially 12).
22 Apr 2008 : Tempest start advertising through Trafficsynergy (this agreement only lasts a few months).
5 Mar 2008 : Tempest announced their partnership with Dreamfields, providing "Dreambags" to students who love playing soccer. A DreamBag includes fifteen pairs of boots, five soccer balls, and fifteen sets of kit, including numbered shirts, shorts and socks. In other words, everything you need to start a new team, or to make one that’s up and running feel like they can take on the world. Dreamfields will be identifying 16 schools in the Gauteng area and (together with Mango Airlines) will be providing them with Dream bags.
