Places of interest in Malawi include:
Liwonde National Park is a small nature reserve but it’s bursting with wildlife including hippos, water buffaloes, elephants, lions, and crocodiles. You can also find 400 of the 650 species of birds in Malawi here. The landscape is varied with acres of savannah, woodland, and flood plain. Elephant are definitely the main attraction as tourists are usually able to get very close.
Mulanje is a hiker’s paradise with clear paths, good quality huts, ease of access, and jaw-dropping scenery. This is the home of Mt Mulanje, a towering hunk of granite that rises into the clouds. Lush valleys and sparkling waterfalls complete this dramatic scene. The area’s also known for the Mulanje cedar which grows up to 40m high. Look out for all kinds of wildlife such as monkeys and black eagles.
Cape Maclear offers the ultimate in relaxation. Relax on powdery sand surrounded by mountains and fronted by azure water where fishing boats trawl by lazily. When you’re tired of lying on the beach, sailing, snorkeling, diving, walking, and kayaking are the activities of choice. Accommodation is varied and of high quality.
Zomba Plateau recalls Alpine France with its winding roads, pine forests, and wildflowers. Streams, lakes, and waterfalls dot the landscape. Of course the leopards and birds such as mountain wagtails will remind you that you’re still in Africa. Hike the highlands, stop for a picnic, and then rest for the night in a campground or at the famous Ku Chawe Inn.
Visit Malawi from May to mid-November during the dry season. May to July in particular is cooler with lush vegetation. If you’re going to see wildlife, October and November are the prime months though it can get blisteringly hot.
