About Upington
Upington was founded in 1870 when a mission station was started by Reverend Christiaan Schroder, following an appeal by a local Hottentot leader.
With the orange river winding through it, Upington is a green belt in the surrounding Kalahari desert. Upington is often used as a resting spot for aircraft, as they rust slower in its dry air. Fun fact: because of its very long runway (4.9km), Upington was a designated emergency landing spot for the space shuttle.
