Delta Airlines Flights from JNB & CPT

Don't forget to take a good book with you - Delta Airlines' direct flights to Johannesburg (JNB) from Atlanta (ATL) are scheduled to take a mammoth 16 hours and 10 minutes. It's crazy, but sometimes you can book cheaper flights from JNB to ATL with 1-stop airlines, but they make a long trip MUCH longer. Use the airline prices comparison tool on the left to make a reservation!

The airline is also planning direct flights from Cape Town to Atlanta, which is still subject to approval. This follows United Airlines launching direct Cape Town flights to New York last year.

UPDATE: A new American law coming into effect from November 2015 will ban flying with e-sigarettes and similar electronic smoking devices in your checked baggage. Passengers will have to travel with these devices in their hand luggage and will not be allowed to charge these devices on the aircraft.

On international flights Delta offers AC110V power outlets on their BusinessElite seats on A330s, 747-400s, 767-400ERs & 777s. The same power outlets are available in the first 10 rows of economy class on A330, 767-400ER & 777s (as well as some 757 & 767-300ERs).

• 20 April 2022. Delta's application to operate a triangular route between Atlanta, Johannesburg and Cape Town has finally been approved. This after their initial application went unanswered in 2020. It is not known exactly when the airline will start operating this triangular route. Delta also has a newer application pending for direct flights between Cape Town and Atlanta which they hope to start operating towards the end of this year. Since they aim to offer the direct service three times a week, it seems likely that the triangular route will operate on the other four days of the week.

• 22 February 2022. Delta recently applied for the rights to oprerate direct services between Cape Town and Atlanta. The year-round service will operate three weekly flights. If approved the service will commence on 18 November 2022.

• 8 August 2016. Delta airlines has announced that system errors are causing all flights scheduled for departure this morning to be delayed. They have stated that although some airport message boards says flights are on schedule, they actually aren't. There has been no update as to when this issue will be resolved.
  

• 22 Feb 2016. Delta airlines are hard at work to expand their route network, adding flights from London to Salt Lake City, Edinburgh to New York, Paris to Raleigh-Durham, Munich to Detroit and both Rome and Keflavik to Minneapolis. This European expansion will start in April right trough to May. They are also increasing flight frequency during the peak travel periods to Amsterdam and Tel Aviv. Adding internationational routes to what we consider to be smaller cities in the US is an interesting move, and we're looking forward to see how they perform.

• 4 August 2015: Delta Airlines announced an immediate ban on the shipment of lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo trophies as freight. This is significant as Delta Airlines have several routes to and from Africa. It is a surprising move coming mere weeks after Delta stated that they won't ban this, but the pressure has been mounting since the killing of famous lion Cecil. Delta Airlines has given no official reason for this sudden move.
  

• 7 Jan 2014. The end of an era, as Delta's last McDonnell Douglas DC-9 flies its last flight (from Minneapolis to Atlanta). Delta's DC-9 was the oldest US passenger plane flown by major carriers.

• 12 Sep 2014. Ever wondered what happens to the millions of empty plastic water bottles after a flight? Well Delta Airline's at least puts them to good use. To celebrate their 200th home build with Habitat for Humanity they are funding a home with the proceeds of their recycling program. Delta staff frequently take part in Habitat for Humanity building homes for the lesser fortunate in the states and countries they serve. We think more companies should follow suit!

• 26 Dec 2013. Delta's coders seem to have had a bit too much of a Christmas celebration. A technology hiccup on 26 Dec 2013 resulted in some lucky passengers booked Delta flights at heavy discounts, for example USD40 for a return flight from New York to LAX. "For a portion of the morning today, some prices on delta.com and other booking channels were incorrectly displayed, resulting in lower-than-usual fares for customers. The situation has been resolved and the correct prices are being displayed," said Delta's Trebor Bansetter. Did any South Africans score out of the deal? If so, please let us know.

• June 2013. Delta purchases 49% of Virgin Atlantic, and plans to scrap loss-mkaing routes, but SA flight routes seem safe: “Virgin Atlantic has operated successfully out of South Africa for 17 years. None of South Africa’s routes are at risk of being scrapped.”
