(from 11 February 2012 Comair British Airways suspended its Johannesburg to Nelspruit flights)
As usual the Cape Town to Nelspruit flights were exorbitantly expensive, so we first flew with Velvet Sky from Cape Town to Johannesburg and then from Johannesburg to Nelspruit with BA (Comair). British Airways started flying the JNB-NLP route on the 4th May 2010 in Boeing 737-300 aircraft, and the 25th April 2011 was the first time we flew the route. What a pleasure having more legroom after the cramped up Velvet Sky experience.
The check-in queue was short as usual. We were ushered to the check-in lady who asked where we were flying to. I replied Nelspruit, at which the lady who was walking away from the check-in said she was also flying to Nelspruit and asked why she had been told to go to the Kulula queue. The check-in lady said she had booked a Kulula flight to Nelspruit. I explained there are no Kulula flights to Nelspruit, and that if you book through the Kulula website you actually are flying a BA flight to Nelspruit. Eventually an understanding was reached, and the lady in front of us was checked-in.
The flight is over before you know it, we'd barely risen above the clouds before we started descending - well done BA staff on getting a snack pack out in time for us to munch on. The snack pack consisted of a packet of crisps, dried fruit, water and a little chocolate. The flight is so short that there simply isn't time for full meals to be handed out.
Sadly, the trip ended off with one piece of luggage being lost (which happened to be our largest piece of luggage, with all of our clothes in it). A couple of other people's luggage also went missing. The Comair attendant cross-checked our luggage labels with the luggage we actually had, confirmed that it was missing and took down the details of where we were staying (Simbavati River Lodge and then onwards to White River). She said that they'd attempt to fly the luggage from Johannesburg to Nelspruit on the Airlink flight later in the afternoon (but Airlink was fully booked).
Comair said there was a problem with the conveyor belt in Johannesburg, and so the bag was never loaded onto the flight. Don't worry Comair, I know these things aren't necessarily your fault.
It cost us R1482 from Johannesburg to Nelspruit (for 2 adults, 1 toddler and 1 infant), although we ended up paying only R433 because of the Kulula moolah we'd accumulated on a Kulula credit card. On the way back from Nelspruit to Johannesburg, it cost us R1572 (although, again, we only paid R152 because of a second Kulula credit card we have!)
