2013-06-12 Rating 4.5/5 : After a two hour drive down the West coast and over a forty minute period of harsh gravel, I was thinking to myself this place better be the reflective epitome of Heaven. I was pleasantly surprised to experience that it was exceeding of my expectations; even the cold of the night could not take away the warmth of being at Shelley Point Hotel, spa and country club. From the moment that we arrived at the hotel in our large entourage preparing to throw down for my brother's fortieth birthday dinner; we all pleasantly got smiles and warm gestures of acknowledgment all the times we walked past or interacted with Shelley point staff. Upon our arrival on the Friday evening, we headed to the Sao Antonio restaurant, which is situated next to the flawless blue Country Club pool & deck which boasts a fountain feature of water running down a wall into the pool, creating a serene Serengeti feel while eating or having drinks. The Sao Antonio restaurant blesses the pallet with freshly made foods, wines of royal grandeur, fresh juices and desserts that are the epitome of soul food. From the professional feel of five star services in the dining areas to the wholehearted homely feel of comfort in the bedroom with freshly steamed linen with electric blankets for those extra chilly nights, a warm beverage station, bar fridge, fresh fluffy white towels and organic soaps and lotions to keep your skin as a sense heightened as the rest of your being from this exquisite experience. They even make sure to curb the loneliness with a DSTV bouquet and by having inter-joining rooms, which worked out perfectly for the big group we had, we almost played maze games between an entire floor of inter-joining rooms and even when we had problems with our door keys, the staff were always more than willing to assist us, no matter how many times we called for assistance. The Saturday of our event boasted a fantastic sunny morning which we spent casually playing golf on a well maintained golf course and inevitably a little bit of fun on the golf carts, after a great breakfast meal where omelettes and poached eggs were prepared fresh and their freshly squeezed orange juice quenched a thirst for a king. Lunch was just as tantalizing and was the perfect prerequisite to the dinner we anticipated to be served at the fortieth celebration or so I had heard. That afternoon I was on a drive back to Table View to fetch an important part of the ceremony that I had accidentally left behind, I was pleasantly assisted by the Shelley Point manager who wilfully appointed a driver to get me Table View as I was in no state to drive due to not having a licence yet. The Shelley point staff are a warm hearted and homely people that are always willing to assist one to attain the utmost comfort needed. The fortieth celebration event was held at the conference centre and we were beautifully greeted with centre pieces that had flowers lodged in water in glass jars and candles floating on top, the finest china set out our tables and a buffet to die for was setup with mouth-watering prawns, chicken skewers, lamb curry, grilled fish, a range of vegetable dishes from salads to curries and pastries too. The service we received that night was impeccable at the least, our wine and champagne glasses were always kept full, our plates were cleared as soon as we put them aside and special requests were attended to with utmost attention, care and detail. After a wonderful evening of fine dining, beautiful speeches, endearing gestures of affection and dancing, we peacefully shuffled over to our rooms with huge smiles on our faces and a lot more alcohol to carry on drinking through the night. Shelley Point was so accommodating that even though we had started a few several private parties in our rooms, they were not uptight about the noise either; they understood our excitement and were more than understanding until about 4am when we had to then understand that people needed sleep to; I was impressed with their moderation of the situation because they didn't shut our operation down abruptly and still managed to keep aware of the other hotel guests. Our last morning at Shelley Point fed us fresh warm breakfast, the hustle of packing that entire party back into our bags and cars and bellboys that assisted us with getting our clothes back to our cars. We drove home happily tired, hung over and very happy with the service and experience we received at Shelley Point. We haven't stopped raving about it to this day, since November 2012. Indeed the greatest havens in Africa are found in the Bundus as these are the areas with the most homely people, in the middle of nowhere, at least twenty minutes from the nearest small town we received the best service and made the most heart-warming connections that made me feel the essence of Ubuntu (I am because you be), which is a rare sentiment to find from strangers these days.
