The people of the Free State

About three million people live in the Free State on 129 480km² of land (which makes it marginally larger than the Western Cape). The mother-tongue of the majority of Free Staters is Sesotho (the mother-tongues of the majority of the rest is Afrikaans and isiXhosa - pronounced with a click!).

The Free State has the highest adult education level in the country. The province has a strong network of higher educational institutions.

The Eastern Highlands is brimming with dressed sandstone buildings, and lovely decorated Sotho houses dot the prairie.

Valuable rock art is found in the province, especially in the districts of Bethlehem, Ficksburg, Ladybrand and Wepener.
