"Studies of the carbon tax proposals indicate that if implemented, the carbon tax would amount to some R165 per tonne of CO2 emitted, and Eskom is by far the biggest CO2 emitter in South Africa because of its coal-fired power stations. Estimates indicate that at current emissions levels, a carbon tax of R165 per tonne would equate to an extra R35bn a year cost for Eskom. Says Yelland: “Such a cost is way bigger than Eskom’s net annual profit after tax, and would have to be passed through to the customer in the form of increased electricity prices”. Yelland estimates that if the carbon tax were implemented as above, consumers could expect to see a further average increase of about 14c per kWh, or 26.8% of today’s price". |
