Are you looking to get car rental jobs with Avis, Europcar, Budget, First Car Rental, Hertz, Tempest, Sani (was Thrifty) or Bluu? Or maybe you're a petrolhead who just wants to work in the travel-by-motor-vehicle industry? Those in with a chance for the client-facing roles will be outgoing, friendly and willing to work their fingers to the bone.
About 12,000 people work for the South African car rental industry, according to SAVRALA (the SA Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association).
In trying to get a job one needs to avoid the scams that do the rounds with fake jobs; scumbags trying to take advantage of those who are desperate for work - do not use an agency which charges fees for its services - this is a sure sign of a scam.
There are two ways to get a job in the car rental industry:
Apply to a car rental agency for one of their jobs.
Apply to one of the companies which a car rental agency contracts out to do some of its work.
If you cannot contact them directly via email or phone; most car rental agencies allow you to apply for jobs either on the social media or they have job portals (specialised websites) where you can search for and apply for jobs. However, for making an impression, nothing beats a physical visit to their offices!

If you receive no reply after a few weeks then contact them again sending a thank you and follow-up letter. Getting hired is often a matter of persistency.
Car rental jobs cover a wide spectrum of vastly different careers, from mechanics to client-faving position; but approaching a company and saying you are up for anything is a poor strategy, it's best to apply for a particular job. So, start off by deciding which job you want to do (which usually comes down to what you're most qualified for).
This includes customer services as well as keeping cars clean (yes, car cleaning is a job!) and safe and car park attendants making sure that customers can find their vehicles. Shuttle bus drivers assist in getting customers from car rental branches to and from the airport. Rental sales agents:
assist clients with their bookings, and try and sell additional add-ons to them.
handle the paperwork such as rental agreements
allocate vehicles based on reservations and client preferences
do final preparations of vehicles for their clients, ensuring that add-ons booked are there.
Handle post-rental queries.
Drivers move the vehicles around to ensure that they are in the correct place. For this you'll need a valid South African drivers license and sufficient experience with driving (e.g. 5 years).
Where the repairs of the vehicles take place, as well as any surplus maintenance to that which the original motor manufacturer does.
Jobs such as service technicians, panel shop polishers and parts managers may be available.
The corporate team are responsible for doing the company's financial reporting, designing and managing car rental products, marketing, sales, data tracking and analytics, human resources, taking care of all the legal issues that arise, and there would be a fleet team responsible for moving the fleet between locations.
They may be responsible for invoicing and following up with creditors.
A call center would usually be responsible for customer services.
Key accounts managers are appointed to look after the relationship with companies which make large volumes of bookings; these are sales-oriented jobs with sales targets being set (ie you'll get paid more if you make more sales, but will get fired if you sales go down!). You'll require negotiating skills to get the best deals with the various corporates, this will involve presenting your ideas to management of your car rental company, as well as to the clients. Friendliness goes down well, and you may need to entertain clients, e.g playing golf with them.
The tech guru design, set up and maintain the various technological platforms on which a car rental company works. This may include both client-facing as well as internal platforms.
Once a car ages, usually a car rental agency would want to sell it, and would have a car sales team to ensure that value on sale is maximised.
All the various offices of car rental agencies would require the usual support services such as:
They may either directly employ these staff or they may outsource this to another company (if, when you contact them, they say that they outsource it, ask them to whom it's outsourced, so that you can check whether the outsourcer has any vacancies).
