Cheap Flights from Lanseria to Cape Town
Even though it is a secondary airport in Johannesburg to OR Tambo, there are choices for booking flights from Lanseria to Cape Town (and lovers of cheap flights will be delighted to know that both the choices are low cost carriers): Kulula and Mango Airlines.
Both airlines fly Boeing 737-800 jets, with Kulula planes typically having a bit more legroom, but Mango planes being the only ones with wifi.
Given that they fly the same planes on the route, we're not sure why Kulula flights are scheduled to take 2 hours and 5 minutes, whereas Mango Lanseria to Cape Town flights are scheduled to take 2 hours and 15 minutes (Mango not the fastest fruit?!). There are 2 theories: (1) depending on weather, flying slower saves avgas making cheaper flights possible & (2) it's possible to get more on-time ratings if a larger marging of safety is built into the flight times.
For a long time Kulula HLA-CPT flights were the only ones, in accordance with an agreement Comair (Kulula's holding company) had with the airport, much to the consternation of 1time airlines (a competitor). 1time Airlines did eventually start flying from Lanseria to Cape Town, but went into liquidation shortly thereafter.
