ITA replaced Alitalia as is Italy's flag carrier to operate flights from Rome and Milan to the rest of the world. They are hoping to join the Star Alliance again.
Alitalia used to offer the only direct connection between South Africa and Italy. This was not only convenient, but surprisingly affordable as well. From their hub in Rome, Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, ITA now also connects to various destinations in Italy and Europe.

21 October 2021: Alitalia ceased operations earlier this month as the airline closed down. It is not the end of the Italian airline though, as the re-imagined Italia Trasporto Aereo (ITA), took over the fleet and crew to restart operations. The airline is being rebranded with a new logo in blue to match the Italian sports teams.
29 April 2018: Alitalia Airline has re-introduced flights between Johannesburg (OR Tambo) and Rome (Leonardo da Vinci - Fiumicino). Their first flight to South Africa in over 16 years touched down in Johannesburg on the 10th of April 2018. They will operate four return flights per week on this route. This makes Alitalia the only airline to offer direct flights between South Africa and Italy.

There are multiple check-in options including their mobile app, the airline's website and at the airport (up to 60 minutes prior to departure).
Check-in closes 60 minutes prior to departure for international flights and 35 minutes prior to departure on domestic flights.
Boarding gates close 15 minutes before departure.
Alitalia has three cabin classes on all flights between Johannesburg and Rome.
Passengers travelling in Economy Class can enjoy personal entertainment with Alitalia's on-board entertainment, Wi-Fi and live news.
Passengers on short-haul international flights can enjoy a drink and a snack.
Passengers on international flights of more than three hours can ejoy a sandwich, dessrt and both hot and cold meals. It is not possible to book speciality meals.
Passengers on long-haul flights from Italy can enjoy two meals, one a full three course and another snack or breakfast. If the flight last longer than eleven hours a third service including a snack and drink will be served.
Along with a more lenient baggage allowance, passengers travelling in Premium Economy Class can enjoy more leg room and privacy.
Along with the typical Economy Class service, passengers can also enjoy a night kit and Limoncello.
Along with all the benefits that Premium Economy Class passengers can enjoy, Business Class passengers can make use of SkyTeam lounges and enjoy even more leg room and privacy in comfortable seats.
The premium class meal service is also heavily inspired by Italian tradition.
Alitalia Airlines only operates flights from Johannesburg in South Africa to Rome and beyond.
