1time airline quits flying between Johannesburg & Mombasa in October 2012.
In light of the Somalia-related security issues, Kenya are desperate to save their tourist industry, so it was not completely surprising when they allocated slots to 1time airline to fly to Mombasa. From the 5th March 2012, 1time airline is starting operating flights between Johannesburg & Mombasa (Moi International Airport). The initial price was R3238 for a return flight, and I should have given in to my temptation and bought a ticket, as I see flight prices have subsequently risen.
"1time has been looking to expand our routes for some time, and Mombasa presents the perfect opportunity to do so. The city is one of Kenya’s most popular destinations, and a highly sought after holiday location. Therefore, this route has vast potential to entice new customers, and add further value to 1time’s bottom line." says Rodney James, 1time airline's Chief Executive Officer.
There were 2 flights a week, on Mondays and Fridays. Flights leave Johannesburg O.R. Tambo at 07h45 and arrive in Mombasa at 12h45. The return flight is scheduled to leave Mombasa at 13h45 and arrive in Johannesburg at 16h45.
Situated on the south-Eastern Kenyan coastline, Mombasa is a popular destination for its beaches, quality hotels and year-round tropical climate. It's probably best to go in January and February, when there is less rainfall.
When you are there, visit Fort Jesus (artifacts from when Mombasa was involved in the slave trade), Bombolulu Workshops (products made by the disabled), Hindu Temples and Mombasa Tusks. Make a day trip to Funzi island in a dhow boat.
