1time Cape Town review |
1time v Mango v Kulula |
We were absolutely delighted to have booked these Cape Town to Johannesburg tickets for R391 each as part of a 1time flying seats special. The way to book flight specials is by (1) subscribing to our newsletter, so we can tell you about them, (2) planning way ahead, and (3) being flexible with your dates. For example, we booked our tickets on the 19th April 2011, but only flew on the 25th August 2011. We wanted to fly on the Friday, but decided to rather fly on the Thursday, to take advantage of the special - on the Friday the 1time special was only available very late at night or very early in the morning, and we didn't want to subject our kids, or ourselves, to that.

1time quits flying CPT - Lanseria |
5 Mar 2012 |
1time begins Cape Town - Johannesburg Lanseria Airport flights. |
After getting myself seated, I remembered why I love flying 1time airline - the generous leg-room. So nice to be able to stretch out my legs on a plane. Mango might sometimes offer cheaper flights, but I just feel a bit too cramped up on their planes.
We used EZ Shuttle to get us to the airport, paid R20 to a porter to give us a hand and sailed through the short 1time check-in at Cape Town International Airport. 1time had seated the 3 of us in seats A, B & C; which we bartered with passengers on the plane for C, D & E (on the 1time layout A & B are next to each other, as are C, D & E).
I spend a lot of time moaning about the increases in airport taxes (going up some 70% this year), but I do love the wonderful vistas which have been built at Cape Town airport. Look at this lovely view of Mango Airlines planes parked at CPT.
It was a glorious day to be flying from Cape Town. Here's a suggestion for a value-add for the airlines - having special headphones through which you can listen to a commentator tell you about what you're seeing on the route. We coud all become experts at our country's geography.
One of the air hostesses might previously have been a DJ at The Church in London, as halfway through the flight the intercom was put on extremely loud, which woke our baby up :(
After running the gauntlet of helpers at O.R. Tambo offering lifts in their taxis, we arrived at First Car Rental to pick up our vehicle from their friendly staff - a Ford Ikon - which drives very nicely thank you very much. One of the things I enjoy in Joburg is to listen to the business hour on Classic FM (for some reason this awesome radio show hasn't hit Cape Town), and so tuned into that, turned on my Blackberry SatNav to direct me, and had a lovely drive to the Protea Hotel in Sandton.
A tip for vegetarians staying at the Protea Hotel in Sandton, is to visit the Village Walk, where you can pick up some excellent Indian curries for dinner. The water pressure was very low, and there was a note explaining that this was "due to a burst pipe" which Rand Water was busy sorting out. I bought 5-day's of wireless internet for R295 at the Balalaika, but for some reason kept losing the connection with my laptop - so phoned their wireless helpdesk, after the obligatory 5 minutes on hold, the consultant explained that some access points aren't working in the area of the Protea Hotel Balalaika - I asked for a refund, and he said that he'd have to escalate this to the refund department to phone me about that...and eventually they phoned, and a couple of hours later I got an email saying that my credit card transaction had been reversed - persistence pays off!
We'll give more details when we review, but in the meantime here's what our booking looked like:
