The Maputoland coast is in northern Kwazulu-Natal. It is a protected site for nesting sea turtles. The turtles nest between November and February, when the water warms as the Agulhas current moves closer to Africa. There are two species of turtle which nest here:
Lea therback (Dermochelys coriacea)
Loggerhead (Caretta caretta)
Their favourite nesting spots are between Kosi Bay and Bhanga Nek.
The hatchlings feast on Portuguese men-of-war (blue bottels) and the purples storm snail (Vellela).
