Situated about a 90m drive north of Cape Town, Langebaan is where things get a little rougher and the true west coast starts. It has a beautiful lagoon, so if you're into watersports it'll literally be your oyster, there's Mykonos if you care for a flutter, and the town serves as a great staging point to the attractions of Veldrif, Port Owen, Mykonos, Darling, Dwarskersbos and Elandsbaai.

Stay in a houseboat at Kraalbaai for an unforgettable experience.
I love road trips. Every year since I was three, my parents have taken an annual holiday to the coast. I’ve spent part of every December holidays at one of The Cape’s many beach resorts. I suppose this is where my love for the ocean comes from. There’s something about waking up with the ocean right outside your door (or in my case, the tent flap!) with sea gulls screeching and the smell of salt in the air that makes you happy to be alive. My favourite holiday happened a few years back, when I was in between school and university and the real world seemed close enough to touch but still out of my grasp. My mother had booked a few days at Club Mykonos in Langebaan just before the peak season. It would be my family’s first time there, and we departed on our road trip early on a fresh, crisp morning with sleep in our eyes and sunscreen on our faces.
When I think about why this is my favourite holiday (because I suppose stories about going overseas to sun drenched beaches and exotic locations could be more interesting to some) I remember what it felt like to be young and in love with the sun, and how walking around that place helped me envision what it would be like to be in Greece (a place I had yearned to go to for quite a while - my wanderlust had become rather acute at that point). I remember the hum of the ocean, and the way the stars huddled in abundance in the night sky, and sunsets that were so spectacular the photographs I had would never do it any justice.
There wasn’t any one thing that made it my favorite holiday; it was just being there, having those moments. There was a sort of magic to that place: the boat rides at the harbor, the fresh seafood, the fairy lights and music coming from the bar by the pool. Maybe it was because I was looking at things with fresh eyes, but I still remember how tacky my hair got from the salty air, and how my skin soaked up the sun like I’d been stuck in winter all my life and how at night the air was warm and seductive.
I haven’t been to many places in my life, and I have extensive plans to travel the world, but whenever I am trying to survive a harsh winter or I can’t remember what the ocean smells like, I think about that place that I haven’t been to in a while, and I remember that it’s not that far away and if I want to go back, all I need to do is pack the car, get someone to feed the dogs, and drive.
