Flight Centre purchases GapYear.com, a specialist in global gap year planning, and plans to expand the Gapyear business, establishing dedicated sites for travellers in the Australia, UK, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States.

Flight Centre South Africa voted best medium-sized company to work for, and best overall in the tourism and leisure sector (2010 Deloitte survey).

Flight Centre renews its global agreement with Travelport, as preferred GDS ( global distribution system) provider, until 2015. The new contract covers Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, New Zealand, UAE and the UK. Travelpor is an operator of the Galileo and Worldspan systems. Travelport also owns some fourty eight percent of Orbitz Worldwide, an online travel company.

Having not managed to negotiate a suitable remuneration model, Flight Centre stops offering Kulula flights from its outlets.

2008

Recently Flight Centre has expanded further afield; selling flights in India, China and Hong Kong. In August 2008 Flight Centre opened its largest office in the UK in High Street Kensington, London.

2004

In a 2004 Deloitte survey, Flight Centre South Africa is voted Best Company To Work For in the Tourism, Leisure and Entertainment sector, whilst taking 4th spot overall.

1999

Flight Centre US reopens.

Flight Centre lists on the Australian stock exchange. Out of all companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Flight Centre Limited has the highest percentage of staff ownership.

1995

Flight Centre Canada opens and Flight Centre UK reopens.

1981

Graham Turner founds Flight Centre Limited (he still owns 18%), with offices being opened in Sydney. Offices had been opened in the US, UK and New Zealand by 1990 (but the UK & US offices were closed during the Gulf War in 1991). In 1995 Flight Centre South Africa was opened, with the first Flight Centre store opening in Johannesburg's Eastgate Shopping Mall.
