Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal

Dundee is situated in northern KwaZulu-Natal, and is much visited due to its battlefield history (Zulus beating up the British, the British returning the favour, Boers and English and many others). Dundee was originally the name of a farm owned by Peter Smith, who was born near the Scottish Town of Dundee. Because of the flourishing coal industry a settlement established at Dundee and in 1882 Smith and some pals proclaimed the town.

Getting to and from Dundee

By air

Fly in to Durban Airport and then drive to Dundee. There are not as many international flights to Durban airport, so coming from overseas you may need to fly via Johannesburg International Airport. However, Durban Airport has frequent flights connecting to all major South African cities.

By car

From Durban, drive on the N3 national road towards Johannesburg. Turn off the N3 onto the N11 and Dundee appears on your right.

Dundee is also well known for sitting atop loads of coal deposits.

Battle of Talana

On the 20th October 1899, the British and Boers engaged with each other near Talana Peak to being the South African War (a.k.a. The Anglo-Boer War); the battle of Talana was also the first time the British troops wore khaki.

Dundee enjoys warm summers and mild winters with chilly nights.
