Since V Australia stopped flying the route, there are no direct flights from Johannesburg to Melbourne; so you're going to have to stop somewhere to cool off on the way. Even though it's one heck of a detour, the Middle-Eastern Airlines are often cheapest (Emirates, Etihad & Qatar Airways). The Flying Kangaroo, Qantas, usually offers the cheapest airfares.

Shortest Flight path from Johannesburg to Melbourne
It is 10,339km from Johannesburg to Melbourne, about the same distance as from Los Angeles to Auckland. There are now no aircraft operating direct flights from Johannesburg to Melbourne. However, even when V Australia flew the route, rules governing twin-engined 777 aircraft which V Australia flew from South Africa, required them to be within 3 hours flying time of an airport at all times. So, instead of flying the shortest route V Australia flew a more northerly route keeping within 3 hours of Perth and Mauritius (SAA and Qantas 747s, which have 4 engines, fly a more southerly route from Johannesburg to Sydney). The 777 is about 20% cheaper to operate than 747s.
