The People of Gauteng

With more than 7 million people in 17 010km², Gauteng is the country's most densely populated province. Close to 100% of the people are urbanised. Less than 10% of the adults in Gauteng have received no schooling.

Cradle of Humankind

At The Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site, you will find Mrs Ples, a distant relative of Home Sapiens slumbering there.

'Maropeng' is the visitor centre within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site. The word 'Maropeng' is a Setswana word meaning 'returning to the place of origin'. It is located on the West Rand, an easy drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria. Visit the wesbsite at www.maropeng.co.za
