Introduction
The Deluxe Suites on Rovos Rail offer a luxurious experience that transports passengers back to a bygone era of elegant train travel. These suites are praised for their spaciousness, comfort, and attention to detail, making them a popular choice for those seeking opulence on the rails.
Deluxe Suite Overview
Deluxe Suites typically measure around 10 square meters (108 square feet), providing ample space for relaxation. They feature a layout that includes a cozy lounge area with a comfortable sofa, a small table, and chairs, alongside a sleeping area. There are usually three such suites per carriage.
The Deluxe Suite may either be fitted for a double bed (see above) or twin single beds (see below). The beds can be configured as:
- a large double stretching crosswise across the suite,
- a large double stretching lengthways across the suite,
- twin beds stretching crosswise across the suite,
- twin beds stretching lengthways across the suite,
- twin beds in an L-configuration, often positioned high to allow for better views of the passing scenery whilst laying in bed.

Amenities and Features
Amenities that enhance the stay include air conditioning, a mini-bar or bar fridge stocked with snacks, drinks, and a small bottle of sparkling wine (all included in the fare), allowing passengers to specify preferences for beverages (almost all drinks are free onboard, other than the likes of French champagne). An en-suite bathroom comes equipped with a shower cubicle, toilet, wash basin, hair dryers, and shaver plugs. Additional features are a personal safe, writing surface or desk, a fair-sized cupboard for storage, and wood-panelled walls with windows and shutters offering endless views. Services like 24-hour room service, nightly turn-down, and limited laundry are also available. The well-stocked amenity kit and snack bag provided upon boarding are appreciated.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- More spacious layout than Pullmans
- Comfortable beds and excellent views from the high-positioned sleeping area.
- The bed is always a bed; it doesn't have to fold up into a sofa during the day. This is a huge convenience for relaxing or napping during the day
- Sitting area with a table—handy for reading, writing, or sharing a glass of wine.
- Comprehensive amenities including stocked mini-bar and high-quality service.
Cons:
- Higher price than Pullman suites (though not as breathtakingly as Royal)
- Bathroom remains functional but small; with no bath; only a shower.
- Some guests have noted the hairdryer as being inadequate.
