Situated near the Hartbeespoortdam, the Ponciana guesthouse offers 4 things you don't usually find at a Bed and Breakfast - a gym, a world-class jacuzzi (30 minutes for every booking, with extra sessions charged at R80?per 30 minutes), an infrared sauna (R60 for 30 minutes) and a host who can speak just about every European language (Dutch, French, English, German, a bit of Afrikaans but not Italian - Ronny can understand but not speak it). Note that children under 12 may not stay at this guesthouse. The guesthouse is situated in Ifafi, and one of the rooms offers views of the Hartbeespoort Dam (with another offering partial views).
Each of the rooms have a different name signalling the theme according to which they are decorated.
We stayed in the Vineyard, which had a red-painted wall, red curtains, grapes hanging down the side of the mirror and a photo of a wine and a brandy bottle. The rooms have DSTV with 22 channels and a modern air-conditioning unit in them. The showers have 2 showerheads so you can adjust to the feel you like (there was no bath in our room, the Vineyard). The upstairs room overlooking the Hartbeespoortdam is way superior to the other rooms (for instance the Vineyard room's view is of the swimming pool and main house).
This room has a view of the swimming pool and main house.
The Sea View room does not really have a sea view - it has a view of the swimming pool and main house.
The Wild Bush Suite has a partial view of the Hartbeespoortdam.
Without a doubt the best spot to be staying in the Ponciana. The Ponciana Suite is the only room with a true view of the Hartbeespoortdam. It has an adjustable bed and a large bath.
The jacuzzi was imported from the USA, is heated to about 38° and has 39 jets, a special neck-and back massage and a cute fountain going across it. If you've booked a night you're allowed 30 minutes in it (just ask Ronny to fire it up).
There is a big swimming pool, a patio-lounge a bar with a pool table, darts and a wide range of Belgian and local beers (we got a welcome drink when we arrived).
A full breakfast was served in a room with a view of the Hartbeespoort Dam.
Ronny & Yolande, emigrated from Belgium in 2007 and opened the doors of the Ponciana Guesthouse in September 2007. Ronnie previously served in the police services, before he and Yolande fell in love with South Africa and moved here. Being artistic as well, they offer their art works for sale to visitors to remember their stay.
The Ponciana Guesthouse is situated 1 hour from Johannesburg OR Tambo, 25 km from Pretoria and Lanseria Airport. The Sun City Resort, Bakubung Lodge and the Pilanesberg National Park with the Big 5 are a 1 hour drive away, and there are a lot of things to do in and around the Magalies Mountains and Hartbeespoortdam.
The Ponciana Guesthouse offers Airport shuttles on request and also do guided day trip tours in the area. Ronny told us he'd done 75 tours to the Pilanesburg with guests and 5 overland safari tours to the Victoria Falls.
We've been to many hotels and guest houses where smoking is not allowed in the rooms, but this was the first time we've been to a guesthouse where eating "is strictly prohibited" in the rooms. There are other areas to eat.
We left our door open at night and mosquitoes swarmed in. Remember to keep your door closed at night to prevent this happening (and ask Ronny & Yolande for a high frequency tone adaptor if mosquitoes do become a problem).
Towels for the pool are rented out at a rate of R30 per towel (and room towels may not be used at the pool). You can save this expense by bringing your own towel.
Next to the jacuzzi was a cupboard with some towels which said "for private use only" - keeping private items in the house creates a better seperation between the guests' area and the hosts' area.
When we arrived Ponciana's very friendly assistant, Daniel, welcomed us; but didn't know which room to put us in - so we had to sit outside in the garden whilst waiting for the owners to get back.
The upstairs room overlooking the Hartbeespoort Dam is far superior to the other rooms. Many hotels provide free upgrades when their best rooms are not being used, and this makes guests feel great at no extra cost to the hotel.
We have no problem with the fact that Ponciana don't allow children under the age of 12, we respect and understand their reasons. However, we do think it's important to treat guests in a professional courteous manner, even when you want to bring up an issue. First greeting and introducing yourself is a basic courtesy which should be respected, before jumping into the fact that you have an issue. Having a cross look and cross tone of voice and questioning whether somebody's baby "is clean" before introducing yourself does not create a good first impression.
