When to go
Hanoi will be 17/18 degrees in January/December; but if you can live with that; then January/December is the best time to go; it has the lowest humidity, lowest temperatures and lowest rainfall. It will be too cold to swim in Halong Bay, and the skies in the north may be grey, but that is part of the compromise to have livable weather in Ho Chi Minh City.
January has more reliably blue skies than December in Hanoi; so January is the ideal month; just avoid the Tet holidaywhich is usually in January or February.
