Golden Arrow is the original Cape Town bus service, which has helped many a Capetonian on trips ranging from getting to and from work, to visiting friends and even ensuring that they get to their wedding on time.

5 Day Bus Pass

In June 2024 Golden Arrow launched a 5 day bus pass, with pricing varying depending on the route on which it is going to be used; it is initially available on the following 4 routes:

Bellville to Cape Town City
Khayelitsha to Cape Town City
Khayelitsha to Wynberg
Mitchells Plain to Cape Town City
Steenberg to Cape Town Cit

How to pay for bus tickets

You can either pay in cash on the bus or make use of the GABS Gold Card. Ticket types can be loaded onto the GABS Gold Card at any sales point; you present your Gold Card to the sales agent and request a ticket type; they will load the ticket type onto your card and provide a receipt. When you board a Golden Arrow bus you can tap your Gold Card on the card reader at the entrance to the bus; if a green light appears then you have a valid ticket loaded to your Gold Card and you can board the bus.

The Gold Card cannot be used on metrorail or myCiTi buses.

Call centre bookings: Unfortunately, reservations cannot be made via the 24/7 call centre (0800-65-64-63)...but do phone the number if further information is required about where to book.

Alcohol & smoking: Consumption of alcohol as well as smoking is not permitted on all Greyhound coaches. Intoxicated passengers may not board.

Luggage: Golden Arrow, at its sole discretion, may refuse to allow luggage on board. They do not accept unaccompanied luggage. Firearms, hazardous/harmful chemicals, explosives, inflammable liquids, or toxic substances are not accepted on all Golden Arrow buses. All luggage is carried at the passenger's own risk.

Pets: At the discretion of Golden Arrow, pets may (or may not) be permitted on any of their buses; at the passenger's own risk.

Ticket cancellation & refunds: Tickets cannot be cancelled or refunded; and are not transferrable. Tickets may not be used to hop on and hop off along the route, but rather must be used as part of one unbroken trip from start to finish.

Unaccompanied children: Only children that are 12-years and older are accepted to travel unaccompanied. Proof of identification will be required both on purchase of the ticket as well as boarding.

Free bus rides for unemployed jobseekers

The Western Cape Government have teamed up with GABS to offer free rides to job interviews for unemployed Western Capers with a South African identification document. The project is called "Getting YOU to Work". You must be on your way to a scheduled job interview, and you must be nominated by the partner company to be given a free bus ride. If the partner company nominates an unemployed person for the free travel, and the unemployed person agrees to it, his or her details are entered int the system, after which the unemployed jobseeker will receive an sms message on their cellphone instructing them how to register online.

If you are an employer who wants to partner with the Western Cape Government in this program, the steps are as follows:

Type in your email address, click to verify. A verification code is sent by Microsoft to your email address. Copy the verification code and type into into the online portal to verify your email address.

Free Golden Arrow bus tickets for unemployed jobseekers

You will then arrive at this screen; headed "The JobSeeker Travel Voucher Programme - Your free ride to opportunity".
There is a help desk which can be accessed either by phoning +27-860-142-142 or by clicking on the message symbol and creating a query, or by emaling service@westerncape.gov.za.
You can click "Add" to add beneficiaries; you will be asked to input their South African identification number. There are limits to the number of jobseekers each employer can add.

Online portal for free Golden Arrow bus tickets for the unemployed

Once registered the unemployed jobseeker will receive an sms message explaining how to collect the free bus vouchers (to 12 total free bus rides maximum), a Golden Arrow kiosk or retailer agent must be visited (with an SA ID or passport) where the free rides are loaded up onto a Golden Arrow Gold Card. You have 30 days after receiving the sms to go pick up your free rides. To complete the process, the Gold Card is presented when boarding a Golden Arrow bus. The vouchers may only be used on weekdays between 8am and 4pm on Golden Arrow buses. All vouchers expire on March the 31st, 2025.

10 May 2025. SAFA Cape Town, in collaboration with MTN South Africa, Golden Arrow Bus Services, and the Western Cape Government, has launched a transport initiative to enhance soccer accessibility in the Cape Metro area. The program provides pre-loaded Golden Arrow Gold Cards for players to use existing bus services on match days, ensuring reliable transport to soccer matches. MTN supports the initiative by funding the smart cards.
20 March 2024. GABS announces that bus fares are increasing by 7 percent on average in April 2024, mostly as a result of the increase in the oil price and hence price of diesel/petrol.

25 Dec 2017. Whilst bus fares are increased by 7% on average, pensioner fares are kept level.
Nov 2017. Hosken Consolidated Investments announces that they plan to list Golden Arrow; and that it was possible that after the listing Golden Arrow may expand its services into other parts of the country, or eve to transporting freight.
18 Sep 2017. During taxi strikes, a number of buses were attacked, whilst a Golden Arrow bus was set on fire in Delft South.

28 Jul 2017. In its interim financials over the 6 months to 31 March, Hosken Consolidated Investments announces that Golden Arrow grew their turnover by 12%, and grew their EBITDA by 19%.
12 Jun 2017. During the morning, a Golden Arrow bus was set alight as it went through Khayelitsha, on the N2, but fortunately the driver was not hurt. The N2 was closed to traffic for a period.
22 May 2017. Two Golden Arrow are petrol-bombed and thereby set alight on Oscar Mpetha Rd in Mandela Park & Endlovini; during a protest for land.
11 Apr 2017. Golden Arrow performs a lockout halting bus services, as a result of strikes after failing to reach an agreement in wage negotiations. Bus company employers are offering an increase of 7.5% whilst bus drivers want a 12% increase. The negotiations impact on Autopax (owners of Translux & City to City), Golden Arrow, Mega Bus, Putco and Rea Vaya; and by extension MyCiTi. Those holding monthly or weekly clipcards will have the expiry date extended accordingly. Golden Arrow tickets can be used on Metrorail: "WE have a standing agreement with Golden Arrow for years. In the event of anything, we honour each other's tickets", said Richard Walker of Golden Arrow. They reopened for business (along with MyCiTi) on the 15th April 2017 with reduced drivers, after SARPBAC (SA Road Passenger Bargaining Council) announced that the strike was over, and fully resumed operations on the 18th April 2017.
7 Mar 2017. Golden Arrow buys its 1000th bus from MAN TRuck & Bus SA (a subsidiary of MAN Truck & Bus in Germany), put together at their shop in Olifantsfontein.
26 Dec 2016. Golden Arrow increases fares by 4.45%.
2016. Golden Arrow invests in an automatic fare collection system, based on a smartcard.
21 Apr 2015. Two Golden Arrow buses are set alight in Nyanga, and a third is damaged by stoning.
2013. Golden Arrow becomes a Vehicle Operating Company for MyCiTi; via its wholly owned subsidiary, the "Table Bay Rapid Transit". which operates from Cape Town's City Centre to Table View. Other VOCs are Kidrogen and Transpeninsula Investments.
2013. A total of 87 buses are scrapped, offset by the purchase of 120 new buses (at a cost of R190m), with the fleet's average age being 9.6 years.
