Pearl Valley Golf Estate
Pearl Valley Golf Estate is a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course situated near Paarl, about an hour's drive from Cape Town City Centre. As a 24-handicapper I found the course unforgiving - any mistake at the tee box lands you in trouble - on the front 9 this is mostly in the form of water, on the back 9 mostly in the form of thickets of "fynbos" (the unique plant life that you find in the Western Cape). Paarl can get very hot, so don't forget to pack your sun cream. It was a long day, we tee'd off at 1240 and finished at 1840, playing in carts (I missed the GPS that the carts at Arabella had). The course itself is absolutely stunning, with mountain backdrops (Simonsberg and Drakenstein), water features (Berg River runs through it), fynbos thickets and long-established trees never far from you.

The fairways have been sown with ‘all season cool grass’ imported from the USA, a first in South Africa.
An electronically monitored perimeter, which includes a 2.4m high electric fence, surrounds the estate to ensure the residents' security. A manned gate house, 24 hour guard patrols and CCTV cameras ensure an unobtrusive yet effective security system.
