The R1435 that British Airways are charging is a record flight price for them them on this route. We have been surveying the DBN - CPT flight route since 19 May 2007, and the previous highest flight price from British Airways was R1235 in our 31 May 2008 survey.
We don't normally focus on the most expensives buses, but we are surprised by SA Roadlink. When we started surveying bus trips, SA Roadlink was often cheapest. Last time we surveyed the DBN-CPT route, their site wasn't working, and today it started working at the 3rd attempt. Then we discover that they are the most expensive of the conventional buses (R550). Taking into account their spate of accidents (read further), it seems they are in the news for all the wrong reasons.
SAA offered the cheapest business class flight from DBN to CPT (R2817), just over a thousand rand more expensive than their equivalent economy class flight (R1768).
The City to City bus is building up a track record of offering the cheapest bus trips. In today's survey they offer a price of R370 from DBN to CPT.

We looked at car rental prices at Cape Town Airport, and Avis South Africa are the cheapest. The prices below reflect the cost of renting a car for the weekend from the 8th August to the 10th August. Europcar and Imperial Car Rental's (Imperial Car Rental has been rebranded Europcar South Africa since 1 July 2009) prices have gone down to R373, but they are still the most expensive. Thrifty Car Rental's price went up by a rand. First Car Rental's price has also gone up, but this is because they have run out of class L vehicles.

The Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge doesn't have any rooms available (in the previous survey they charged R610 for a night's accommodation) - the only other time they have been fully booked was in our 4 Apr 2008 survey. The City Lodge Hotel group (Courtyard, City Lodge, Town Lodge & Road Lodge) all increased their prices (effective 1 July). The Courtyard hotel increased their price from R855 to R915, the City Lodge hotel increased their price from R831 to R889, the Town Lodge hotel increased their price from R532 to R569 and the Road Lodge hotel increased their price from R355 to R380. The Southern Sun V&A's price went up from R940 to R1287 and the StayEasy hotel Century City went up from R535 to R689. Only the Garden Court De Waal & Sun International's The Table Bay had their hotel prices staying constant.
Rumours abound of passengers singing to keep their bus drivers awake, and SA Roadlink are on the back foot - they've suffered two accidents in June and recently released a press statement saying the one wasn't their fault. They're also involved in a court case about their December 2006 accident in Pietermaritzburg when a number of people died. This week they released "six key safety standards" which they'll abide by. Hats off to SA Roadlink for doing that - comes too late for those who died though.

A lady's hockey team made a great trek from Logan Airport to London to Johannesburg. They visited the Lion Park, and judging from the number of blogs I read which have written about it, petting the baby lions is a highlight [this blog posting has since been removed, which is why there is no link to it].
A Spicejet aircraft (operates in India) in a brand-spanking new Boeing comes in to land.
With oil prices on the rise, we have some airliners going under (Silverjet, Eos & Nationwide), but not everybody in the airline industry is slowing down - locally Interlink Airline has opened a JHB-CPT flight route, and internationally Ryanair has just exercised an option to have 3 Boeing 737-800 new generation planes delivered.
