Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay has been a beach holiday destination for South Africans and her visitors for many a year. With the warm Indian Ocean lapping its shores, the sunny climes and possibly the best tidal pool in Southern Africa, this sprawling city is the largest in the Eastern Cape. And it does not only have beaches to offer. Visit the Bartolomeu Dias museum to find out more about his arrival in the Cape in 1488; climb up the Cape St Blaize Lighthouse or visit the Pinnacle Point Caves to find out more about the history of humankind, with the archaeological project there having pinpointed this as being the area where modern man most likely originated approximately 164 000 years ago.

Walvis Bay

With Dune 7 close to Walvis Bay, this is the port of call for those seeking their adrenaline fix! (For the uninitiated, Dune 7 is the highest in the Walvis Bay area.) Think sandboarding, quad biking and Hydro ball rides. If that sounds too strenuous, take a guided desert tour and learn about the fauna and flora of the Namib Desert. Perhaps you will see a sidewinder or a plethora of lizards. If you would like to explore the history of the area, take a shuttle through to Swakopmund and visit the Swakopmund Museum or take a leisurely stroll and admire the colonial German buildings. There are a large number of German-speaking residents here and much German hospitality.

Luderitz

Luderitz is a small town with a sparkling history. Situated in the Sperrgebiet, a "forbidden" area that is rich in diamonds, there are a number of activities to do. Take a stroll to the Lutheran church at the top of the hill; have something to eat or drink with the locals at the Waterfront; visit the Luderitz museum which contains diamond mining displays and information on people indigenous to the area; go on a tour to Kolmanskop - a ghost mining town that was abandoned years ago and is slowly being encroached by the desert.

Ten years after my original trip as a student, I went on holiday to Greece with my husband and 3 year old daughter. We flew ELAL to Israel and then Olympic air to Athens, (both airlines keeping my youngster very well entertained - to my relief), from which we then decided to set out and explore some of the smaller islands.  Our island visits included Hydra, Spetses and Rhodos. It was whilst we were on one of  these islands that we learnt the 3rd lesson of travel, one that I think has taken many tourists by surprise, and that is that: “The local cuisine of a country may differ somewhat from what we experience at home.” One sunny day we decided to eat lunch at one of the local restaurants on the waterfront. Because we all enjoyed eating calamari, we ordered squid and a Greek salad off the menu. Well, imagine my horror when, instead of some deep fried calamari rings fried in batter, we received a bowl of roughly chopped up, pickled octopus with its tentacles and suckers intact, looking remarkably like the dead octopus we had witnessed a local resident slapping against the pavement as we had made our way to the restaurant. This was accompanied by tomato wedges, olives and feta swimming around in a bowl of olive oil, without a lettuce leaf or a slice of cucumber in sight. This I assumed was the Greek salad. I couldn’t bring myself to eat the octopus, and neither could my husband, so we picked at the salad, whilst my voracious little calamari addict, totally unfazed by the ugly octopus suckers, devoured two-thirds of her meal with great abandonment. For Carol's first 2 lessons in travel, see why bags must have wheels, and when in Austria do as the Austrians do!
