"There is something about travelling in Africa that reaches a spot right down in the very core of your being – it just makes a connection with who we are and our place here on earth –a connection with what is this experience we call life all about. It starts way back in the recesses of your mind – months, even years before you pack your Land Rover and hit the road. It starts with a thought – just a tiny flame or spark – that ignites a fire in your soul – and won’t leave you until the trip’s been travelled, the dust washed off absolutely everything, the gear packed away, the photos developed and the memories stored. It has to be the most wonderful – exciting – fulfilling thing we can ever do, and once the flame has been lit, it burns like a drug in your veins –the dreaming, the planning, the reading, the poring over maps, the plotting of routes, researching of campsites, visiting of websites and following of blogs. It’s a drug alright –I love it and I’m absolutely hooked! It’s the unbelievable experience of watching it all come together –having been born with a single idea – or word – “Where shall we go next year?” And gradually it all unfolds from there...What about Zambia? And then time passes – you’ve made all your plans, you’ve travelled all those miles – and all of a sudden you find yourself sitting on your camp chair in the fading light of day... the sun sets, night falls, you make your camp fire and put up the rooftop tent... Silence settles over the earth like a soft gentle blanket after the dust, the heat and the exhaustion of the day’s travels... And in the magnificence of the moment, you look up into the heavens and see a billion stars – all placed out in their perfect order. You hear and feel  the sounds of the night – and in the distance, a lion roars. And you say to yourself – I am REALLY here. After all that has gone before, to bring me to THIS point – here I sit, alone in the middle of Africa. I am nothing, and I am everything. It is the most humbling, most awe inspiring thing we can ever experience. This more than any other thing reaffirms the greatness and goodness of a God that could create such incredible magnificence out of nothing. Mother Africa – Mother Earth – what an incredible privilege and blessing to be able to travel into the wilderness that remains, and experience for ourselves the world as it was made.
