Make SA Bitcoin History & Win R1000 Flight Voucher

We're keen on creating a bit of history, and are looking for somebody adventurous to create it together with us. Here's the deal : we want to become the first South Africa travel agency to sell a flight for Bitcoins, and we're looking for somebody who wants the kudos for being the first South African to buy a flight with Bitcoins.

In order to create the history we need somebody to fully pay for the flight in Bitcoins, so we can't discount that purchase. What we can do, is give you a R1000 travel voucher to discount your next flight booked through South Africa Travel Online.

We want to keep things completely local in this contest, so the Bitcoin-purchased flight must be a domestic South African flight. In keeping with our ethos of cheap flight offers, the booking must be with one of the South African budget carriers - Kulula or Mango Airlines. The pricing for the airfare will be obtained via our Kulula or Mango Airlines pages in Rands, and will then be translated into Bitcoins. The number of Bitcoins required will be calculated as the Rand airfare price divided by the lower of the Rand bid prices on the Bitx and Ice3x exchanges.

The R1000 voucher can be used to purchase an airline ticket on our flight bookings page. You can book a flight this time with any airline, from SA Express to Emirates, South African Airways, SA Airlink, British Airways and any others; since it's not part of the history making. The voucher can be used to discount a flight on all flight routes available.

Here's How to Enter

Send an email to cheapflights@southafrica.to explaining why you should become the first South African to purchase a flight using Bitcoins; which airline you'd choose to fly with, and why*

The winner

We will then select from those writeups one winner, who will make history together with us.

*There may be other ways of entering, we'll see. You have until the 31st March 2014 to enter the competition, and in April we will select a winner. In the event of any dispute the decision of South Africa Travel Online is final. The winner must book and pay for a flight using Bitcoins (out of their own pocket), within a month of winning the contest. The R1000 flight discount voucher will only be released after the winner has booked and paid for a flight using Bitcoins, and the Bitcoins have been received by us. The R1000 flight discount voucher must then be used within 6 months of being awarded. One of the conditions of entering the competition is to to subscribe to our newsletter.

Because we're making history, we want to get into the history books - the winner should be willing to work together with us in doing a writeup of his/her experiences and share a photo, so can't remain anonymous.

Why other Bitcoin issues don't matter a lot

The Bitcoin has been a bit like the South African Rand recently - it has depreciated a lot. That the value of Bitcoins has fallen a bit should not make a difference to this transaction, as Bitcoins can be bought at this lower exchange rate (all it means is that Bitcoins are cheaper to buy than they were a month ago). Another issue with Bitcoins that has been in the news lately is the news that Mt. Gox, a Bitcoin exchange, has filed for bankruptcy. The Mt. Gox debacle shouldn't feature into this flight transaction either, as it does not involve storing Bitcoins with an exchange for a lengthy period of time.

The bottom line: Air Mauritius's era of profitability under the leadership of Andre Viljoen, previous Chief Executive of South African Airways, continues. The airline reported a profit in the first 9 months of its 2014 financial year, although load factors were down a bit.

MSC Sinfonia says Goodbye to Durban : The MSC Sinfonia has said her final goodbyes to Durban, as she set sail on the 1st March 2014, heading for Cape Town. It's only the MSC Opera visiting South Africa in the 2014/2015 season.

Phuket in Thailand is a favourite exotic beach holiday resort amongst South Africans. The great news is that flights to Phuket are going to get easier/cheaper from August, when Etihad Airways launches the route.
